Issues with KVM/QEMU

Following a suggestion by @knurpht on this post, I decided to try KVM/QEMU.

I created a Tumbleweed VM with XFCE DE which works fine. I’m facing a couple of issues on the installed vm though and I’d like some help please.

  1. Thumbnails in thunar do not appear at all. Neither for images nor for videos. Equally, there are no image previous on the left column of ristretto when I open a pictures folder. Also, when I right click on the desktop and select Desktop Settings from the menu, the first tab one can change the desktop background from, does not show any previews of the available images one can set as background. The preview area remains completely empty as if there are no images at all inside the selected folder.
  2. I tried activating hardware acceleration for the guest vm by enabling both the opengl option in the Display Spice section and the 3D Acceleration option in the Video Virtio section. Having those options enabled resulted in a much worse experience even when moving windows inside the vm. It worked much better without hardware acceleration. Is there anything I can do so that the vm works better when acceleration is enabled? The host system uses an Intel Iris XE Graphics adapter.

Thank you.

Swap to the QXL driver. The host system GPU is irrelevant as not used.

Yes … that is a problem not only in the VM but on my desktop as well … I gave up trying to fix it and just use dolphin … in my experience XFCE is pretty buggy with lots of DBus errors even on my current desktop so I’m just using KDE for now until I see an XFCE update in zypper

Not really … my XFCE VM worked pretty well as long as I avoided the Unigine Heaven benchmark  vkmark worked pretty much as normal though
