Issue with su after zypper update

Hello,

Having issues after doing a bigger zypper update yesterday.
Now running su in the terminal on KDE / or terminal without DE (CTRL-ALT-F1) results in:

su
Cannot assign environment variable BASH_FUNC_mc%%=() { . /usr/share/mc/mc-wrapper.sh
}: Invalid argument

The only way to do things with elevated rights is to CTRL-ALT-F1 and then login as root.

What causes the issue?

Sidenote: Did a fresh install on a very similar machine yesterday with new kernel and packages (same as the problem machine) - no issues there.

Thanks!

Alex

solved the issue:

After some googling i found a thread about midnight commander, i removed the mc package and now it works as expected.

Never used mc on the console before, and if I do need it one day I will reinstall it.

But for now system back running.

Hello and welcome to the openSUSE forums.

As it does not show on a fresh install, it might just be a hickup bound to your system. But if others also suffer from it, it might be worth a bug report.

BTW, for security reasons, always use su - instead of plain su.
They have years ago programmed in su some protections from the worst things that can happen when using plain su, but nevertheless.

thanks, will be using su - from now on.

One more thing I have noticed - when using KDE Konsole: after using su and exit - I can switch to su / root again without being asked for the root password. I want to switch back to immediately being asked my root password again. How do I do that?

Strange. Here:

henk@boven:~> su -
Password:
boven:~ # exit
logout
henk@boven:~> su -
Password:
boven:~ # logout
henk@boven:~>

BTW I always use in KDE “Terminal - Super User MODE”, which does su - under the hood.

Same here, both in KDE and in Gnome.
But sudo by default has a timeout of a few minutes, so what exactly are you using?

And, BTW, how exactly did you do your big “zypper update”?
