is it possible to reduce delay when enter sddm password till plasma open?

Hi.

My system boot time is something like this:

  1. Switch on the computer to GRUB lauching the OS -> 10 seconds
  2. GRUB lauching to SDDM login -> 10 seconds
  3. I enter the password until the login promt dissapear and starts lauching plasma -> 20 seconds
  4. loading of plasma desktop -> 7 seconds

I don’t understand why 3) is so high, I guess it may be some kind of system delay.
I have read a lot about delays in case of wrong password as it is a security measure, but whit correct password?

Is there a way to reduce it?

3 and 4 have nothing to do with boot. It s a bit arbitrary what belongs to boot and what not, but when the login screen is shown, boot is really ready, runlevel reached, all services started, system ready for user login.

I do not understand where you see the difference between 3 and 4. After a login, the desktop to be used is started. In case of KDE, that takes some time indeed. How much depends as everything on e.g. mass-storage speed, CPU number/speed, etc. and also of the desktop (there are lightweight desktops and I assume they take less time to start) and what there is to do. Some people tell their desktop to start many applications (like Kontakt) on desktop start.

Sure! Have a look at startup of my oldest and smallest machine:

Maybe I didn’t express well what I wanted to say. The 3 time is since I enter my password and click enter until “something happen” say that the password is wrong and it tell me that or the password is OK and it start loading plasma, I I don’t understand why it takes 20 seconds to check the password (or that’s what it seems), I think it is a lot.

I understand that for security reasons, when you enter a wrong password the system waits a random amount of time until prompt again, but waiting 20s when password is OK?

If you enter the wrong password, there may be a delay. But when it is the correct password, there will be no delay. However even if the desktop is started up in the background that may not be visible directly on the screen. There might be some time before the screen changes to the openSUSE light bulb. I see similar, but in my case it is only a few seconds. So when you think 20 secs is a bit much, I tend to agree.

And I do not simply try to correct the wording of “boot” to “login” because of being pedantic (which I am). This is to avoid that the searching starts with looking at boot timings with things like systemd-analyze blame, etc. Which would be a spilling of time.

Presumably yours is session-2.scope.

What users are interested in is startup of the system, which indeed comprises more than starting the kernel. Graphical target matters a well as plasma shell completion, see post #3.

**erlangen:~ #** systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 805ms (kernel) + 2.237s (initrd) + 1.452s (userspace) = 4.495s

Correct me if I’m wrong. This is the timing of the login to plasma once the authentication is OK, right?

**andromeda:~ #** systemd-analyze
Startup finished in 3.459s (kernel) + 6.616s (initrd) + 23.599s (userspace) = 33.675s
graphical.target reached after 23.586s in userspace
**andromeda:~ #**

And this the time since boot until I get the login, right?

Yes, that delay can be annoying. But I see it as somewhat of a feature. KDE seems to be organized to put much of the overhead in startup, instead of spreading it out into each application. So, once started, it is very responsive.

Host andromeda has: graphical.target is reached after 33.6s. Session startup time is 690 - 677 = 13s. Total time is 46.6s.
