iPod Touch 4th gen and beyond - can it be done

Has anyone gotten an iPod Touch to work without having windows and iTunes in a VM, or without having to load in Wine, then that large and mostly useless iTunes?

i’ve no problem with the iPods that have the mini hard drives, but I can’t get the newer ones with flash drive storage to add or take off music on my iPod Touch 4th gen.

Hi
So what native linux applications have you tried? Like in your previous thread rhythmbox worked fine (6th Gen). Have you tried fusepod, gtkpod etc?

Hi, malcom
I was hoping that someone had some trick or two up their sleeves for the later model iPods with the ‘flash’ type storage.

What I got working with rhythnbox was our iPod Photo (aka know as iPod with color display) Identify your iPod model - Apple Support (may have to scroll down to find it), a borrowed nano and a borrowed iPod mini. All of them have the spinning disc storage with click wheel navigation and worked well.

So far rhythmbox and gktpod with the iPod Touch 4th gen(not spinning disc storage)
Of the two, gtkpod has Touch ipods in it’s device listings, but none of the will work with my iPod Touch.
gtkpod had a bunch of dependencies it it installed(that I don’t know how to get rid of yet).

ryhthmbox loads in brasero(big deal, I may want to do a cd or dvd someday), but it does not even recognize the iPod Touch what I call the ‘flash’ type storage.

I have looked at specs for floola, banshee(trouble installing it. It is in TW repos but not Leap), and yamipod. I can’t tell if they are compatible with the later iPods or not and hesitate to install, and have to manually remove a bunch of stuff when they don’t work.

I will look at fusepod. I hadn’t heard of it until your post.

Not sure about fusepod yet, needs more investigation.

But gtkpod should work!

gtkpod and libgpod are both on the system. I must be overlooking something.

for rhythmbox and gtkpod, libgpod seems to be the hang up for communicating with later model ipods and iphones. Hopefully it will be updated someday(soon).

Meanwhile from LQ forums, I was pointed here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IPod , then to here https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/IOS and am in process of digging through it to see if there is something there that will work.

I think I have everything but the gvfs-afc and gvfs-gphoto2, and I can’t find ideviceinstaller-git under the ‘Connecting a device’ topic.
I am also not sure how to update ifuse and libimobiledevice if they need latest versions.

Just an update folks. But if you think of something, please let me know. Especially for installing things that are not in the Leap 15 repos.
