INSTALLING PACKAGES IN OPENSUSE 11.4 WITHOUT INTERNET

HI EVERY ONE THIS IS MY FIRST POST IN THIS FORUM, N IAM A ABSOLUTE NEWCOMER IN FIELD OF LINUX.

AFTER TRYING SOME DISTRO INCL DEBIAN, FEDORA, KNOPPIX, REDHAT I FINALLY SETTLED FOR OPENSUSE 11.4. IN CASE OF DEBIAN ALL REPO COMES IN FORM OF DVD (8 NOS) SO I CAN INSTALL ANY PACKAGES ANY TIME, BUT IN CASE OPNSUSE I DONT HAVE INTERNET IN MY HOME PC WHERE I HAVE SUSE. WHEN EVER I NEED SOME ADDITIONAL PACKAGES IT ASKS FOR DOWNLOAD FROM SUSE SITE. I CAN DOWNLOAD PACKAGES FROM MY OFFICE PC WHERE I HAVE INTERNET. I NEED ALL MULTIMEDIA PACKAGES IN FORM OF ISO AR ANY OTHER FORMAT WHICH I CAN USE FOR OFFLINE INSTALLATION. OR CAN I DOWNLOAD OFFLINE REPOSITORY OF ALL PACKAGES BUILD FOR OPENSUSE AND SAVE IN MY HOME PC FOR FUTURE INSTALLATION.

Welcome to the forums. A lot depends on what packages you need. If you have not used the DVD to install, your first step would be to download the DVD and look for the packages you want there. If you want other packages, it is possible to download the rpms; the problem is that they will each contain a list of dependencies which are normally handled automatically if you install them directly.

You wouldn’t want to download all the packages built for opensuse as you won’t want many of them.

One other alternative if you know esactly what packages you want is to use SUSE Studio to create a distribution with all the packages on it that you want and download that to a computer connected to the Internet and then make an installation DVD or USB stick of it.

BASICALLY I WANT MULTIMEDIA PACKAGES AND CODES, I HAVE INSTALLED EACH AND EVERY ONE MULTIMEDIA PACKAGES FROM INSTALL REMOVE SOFTWARE BUT SLILL KAFFAIN, XINE OR ANY OTHER MEDIA PLAYER CANNOT PLAY A SINGLE VIDEO. WHENEVER I TRIED TO PLAY ONE I SAYS " KAFFAIN NEEDS ADDITIONAL SUPPORT DO YOU WANT TO SEARCH YOUR REPO" AFTER SEARCHING IT UNABLE TO FIND ANY CODES. PLEASE HELP

Hello Akhimot. Welcome here.

Can you please unlock the Caps Lock key during the time that you compose a post for these forums. It is very difficult to read (and most people will interprete this as “shouting” to them, which is not what you want I guess).

The presentation at http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10573557/one_click_mmedia/oneclick_slideshow.odp lists all the programs you need; you can download these as rpms though you will also need to check their dependencies and download any dependencies as well. When you start installing them on the machine without internet access, install the dependencies first and finish with the programs themselves.

Recommend:
Take a look at the zypper man pages.
You will find

  • You can run “zypper info [package]” to determine package dependencies
  • You will find a command switch that permits downloading to a location without installing
  • You will find a command switch that permits pointing “zypper install [package]” to a custom location where your package is located.

You can also often download individual packages from
http://software.opensuse.org

Believe that ought to address your needs, but for most “standard applications” you should just download and deploy the DVD source for your installation which should in most cases contain all the files you need to do the initial install (likely advisable to get updated libraries when you can).

HTH,
Tony
