install ATI Radeon HD 2600 issue

Hi guys,

I’ve just done a fresh new installation of OpenSUSE 12.3, KDE version.
But I cannot install the AMD fglrx legacy driver. I also notice that the forum and the repo say it not supported on 12.3.

So is there anyway for me to install and use my graphic card ATI Radeon HD 2600?

Thanks!

If your card is supported by neither the fglrx driver nor the fglrx-legacy, you’re stuck with the radeon driver AFAIK.

I tried to install the driver from amd website, but nothing good :frowning:

It’s really said if I cannot use the graphic card :frowning:

Can I re-use the graphic card if I downgrade to OpenSUSE 12.2 or belower?

Hi
What isn’t working with the radeon driver?

Yes, 12.2 is supported for the proprietary driver as the Xorg is < 1.13

I can’t install the ATI Radeon driver from Archive:SDB:AMD fglrx legacy - openSUSE Wiki (I tried both 1-click install and the repo). And also, in the forum and in the repo Index of /mirror/amd-fglrx-legacy/openSUSE_12.3 it said that “AMD fglx-legacy is not supported on 12.3”

I also tried to install driver from amd website, but like I said above, it error!

So do I really have to downgrade to 12.2? I’ve just install 12.3 :frowning:

Hi
Correct, it won’t work with Xorg >= 1.13 which openSUSE (and other distros) are running.

Like I asked, what doesn’t work?

You could add glamor acceleration by adding the configuration file as indicated below?

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf

Section "Device"
  Identifier "radeon"
  Driver "radeon"
  Option "AccelMethod" "glamor"
EndSection

The maximum resolution in OS 12.3 for me is 1024x768. I need more!

And by the way, can I use repo for 12.2 at http://geeko.ioda.net/mirror/amd-fglrx-legacy/openSUSE_12.2/ to install the drivers for OS 12.3?

Hi
OK, can you post the output from the command;

xrandr

No, it won’t work, nothing to do with the driver, it’s the Xorg version which is now 1.13 and AFAIK the ATI folks are not supporting with legacy devices, suggest you vent with the ATI folks…

@n00bvn

The install with ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics and radeon driver works very well for my needs

at the moment there is no amd legacy driver support for HD-2XXX thru’ HD4XXX for openSUSE12.3

some suggestions ,

for the radeon driver install, do the following checks,

  1. if the directory /usr/share/ati/ exists, run any script with uninstall in it,
    – if necessary run it with parameter --force

  2. verify there is not a file named /etc/X11/xorg.conf,
—if there is rename it to something else

  3. in -yast, --Sytem, —/etc/sysconfig Editor,
    – search for NO_KMS_IN_INITRD and verify it is set to no, if not change it to no
    – then press ok to accept

  4. in -yast, --Sytem, —Boot Loader, ---- Boot Loader Options,
----- Optional Kernel Command Line Parameter
    – if there is the parameter nomodeset there, delete it
–(or any other parameter with modeset in it)
    – then press ok to accept

  5. if any of the following files exist,
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/XX-device.conf
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/XX-monitor.conf
    /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/XX-screen.conf
    — make sure every line in each file is commented out (starts with a #)
(its assumed a standard monitor is installed)
    (XX=> a number between 10 & 90)

with the above, a clean reboot to the radeon driver should be possible,
the set-up should be automatically done by kms

after I do a new fresh installation, there’s no /usr/share/ati directory. so what should I do?

@malcolmlewis:

Below is my output:

xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 60.0*
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   848x480 60.0
   640x480 59.9

Thanks for your helps!

And also, below is my lspci output:

lspci | grep -i vga
04:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV630 [Radeon HD 2600 Series]

At least, I want my monitor run in better resolution :frowning:

Did you check those?

I’m suspecting your installation try of the fglrx driver has disabled KMS and you are therefore not using the radeon driver.
That would explain the max. resolution of 1024x768…

If the above doesn’t help, please post the content of the file “/var/log/Xorg.0.log”.

Like I post above, there’s no /usr/share/ati directory after I do a new fresh installation. So I don’t know what to do according to **keellambert **said.

And, below is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log

https://mega.co.nz/#!gQA0gZiQ!LSP1RHEQ-XZCHtELCwYGkGby-DwBhs16VMiH83S0pmg

Thanks you guys!

After I check the “Hardware Information” in YaST2, I saw that it seem already had the driver, but somehow I cannot use it.

Below is my hardware information:

Forget the /usr/share/ati directory. Check the other points he posted! (2, 3, 4 and 5)
I quoted them to stress this.

And, below is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Thanks you guys!

OK, your Xorg.0.log shows you** are** using the radeon driver with KMS, so you don’t need to check the above anymore.
The driver is asking the monitor which resolution it supports and gets the following answer:

561.661] (II) RADEON(0): Printing probed modes for output DVI-0
   561.661] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz e)
   561.661] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "800x600"x60.3 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz e)
   561.661] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "800x600"x56.2 36.00 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync (35.2 kHz e)
   561.661] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "848x480"x60.0 33.75 848 864 976 1088 480 486 494 517 +hsync +vsync (31.0 kHz e)
   561.661] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "640x480"x59.9 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 489 492 525 -hsync -vsync (31.5 kHz e)

So it seems your monitor isn’t correctly reporting which resolutions it supports.
Is it connected directly or through a switcher? Is the cable ok?

You could try to add a higher resolution manually, see:
https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_graphics_cards_and_monitor_settings

my monitor is very old, it’s CRT Dell monitor, but it works very good. I’ve better resolution than 1024x768 in Windows (1152x…) and everything works good in Windows.

Well, either it says it’s max. resolution is 1024x768 or it doesn’t tell anything, so the driver assumes 1024x768…

Please see the link above to learn how you can add a higher resolution to the driver’s list.

with the radeon driver in use, there should not be the directory /usr/share/ati,
so all is in order in that respect, that was there to ensure the deletion of any
old fglrx install

can the set-up be cold booted with another vga cable?
on some older cables all connector pins are not linked thru’ so the DPMS does
not function correctly
