Hey guys.

Hello,
I built cairo, fontconfig and freetype2 with infinality patches from bohoomil.com for openSUSE 13.2
Check out my repo at http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/nick31:/INFINALITY-ULTIMATE/openSUSE_13.2/
Feedback always welcome.
Funny
I find the fonts perfect in 13.2 without any additional repos
On a 4k screen the default subpixel hinting makes you want to stab yourself in the balls with a butter knife (on slight)
It depends on what you’re used to really, I like the OS X style subpixel hinting so naturally the default hinting that lacks some of the advanced functionality is… not pleasing to my eye
Fontconfig-infinality can be installed from here http://software.opensuse.org/package/fontconfig-infinality. I am using namtrac and infinality myself, and my font for my 1920x1080P IPS screen is much better from the default. Depending on what screen we are using, the result may vary.
yeah i like default rendering as well. i am just used to ms fonts with infinality.
the repo you mentioned has old fontconfig if i am not mistaken. i patched fontconfig-2.11.1, the one which comes with 13.2
the patches came from http://bohoomil.com
I see, will try it. Thanks.
This is great. Thanks for this. Along with Microsoft’s Calibri fonts, my desktop looks perfect.
Brilliant, thank you very much!
Thanks Nick, can I ask you to provide patched versions of Qt and OpenJDK too?
Thought I’d try it out. Is that it, just install nick31’s repo? What after that?
^ Any n00bs out there watching, it just requires a vendor change in yast.
It’s very good. Well worth it.
The default fonts and Radeon driver (in particular) come along in leaps and bounds with each release and kernel update and are now acceptable (I can live worth them anyway whereas I couldn’t before). But your repo definitely emboldens and nicely rounds default text on this screen, it’s easier to read and clearer for my eyes, so it’s a keeper.
I don’t understand why patched version of Qt is required? After installing Nick’s packages, the whole of my KDE environment (which is in fact using Qt widgets) is displaying correctly.
Also, @nick31: I learn from Better Font Rendering In Linux With Infinality ~ Web Upd8: Ubuntu / Linux blog that it is possible to do multiple style selections with Infinality, but I don’t find the relevant script /etc/fonts/infinality/infctl.sh. There is a file /etc/profile.d/infinality-settings (for some reason it has +x permission whereas the other files in that dir don’t) and I find lots of files under /usr/share/fontconfig/conf.avail.infinality but I’m not sure where to go to select the individual (Ubuntu, OSX etc) profiles…
Total noob here =)
Sorry if I took the freedom to open a new thread regarding the same subject but I didn’t want to hijack this thread and thought many noobs out there could be in the same situation…
Thanks
Hi,
I’ve been trying the libraries from your repo on a clean install of Tumbleweed with Plasma 5, and they indeed improve a lot (to me, at least) the font rendering.
However, I’m not sure if everything is fine with the provided solution: I needed to make a change in the provided /etc/X11/xinitrc/xinitrc.d/infinality-settings.sh script in order to get correctly sourced upon session logon (briefly, add a “# to be sourced” comment to it). Else, the xinitrc.common script doesn’t source but executes it, so INFINALITY environment variables doesn’t get applied to session. I could verify this by checking “env | grep INFINALITY” command on a terminal, settings weren’t there. Once I modified the script, the INFINALITY settings get noticiably applied on the session. However, they appear to be still not active in SDDM login screen (fonts still look ugly there, buit that’s a minor issue).
Maybe I’m missing something, as documentation on Infinality patches is really confusing, and mostly not openSUSE related. By some infos, it seems that this script should be copied to /etc/profile.d/, or event locally to user folder. Could anyone clarify a bit on it?
Kind regards,
Eduard Huguet
