Image writer doesn't see the USB stick

Hi,

I have a 128gb USB 3 stick which I’m trying to install the full version of OpenSuse.

I followed the instructions and downloaded the image writer. When I open the image writer I pick the *.iso file. The other button says Copy but the drop down box is blank. I can’t input the drive letter of the USB stick either.

I closed all explorer windows. When I tried the unmount command I was told access is denied even though I’m an administrator.

I running Windows 8.1 on a Lenovo Yoga laptop.

Any ideas?

Can I install it on the stick some other way? I like the idea of using the same stick on multiple machines.

Thanks!

Here is another option to try in Windows: Tools for OSForensics - ImageUSB - Write an image to multiple USB Flash Drives

Any one already running openSUSE should use this: S.C.L.U. - SuSE Create Live USB - Version 1.00 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

Thank You,

JD,

Thanks and I’ll try that if you’ll tell me how to get a *.bin file  All I have are the *.iso I downloaded from the OpenSuse site.

Thanks, Eric

JD, Seems to be choking. I’m using the DVD iso image and it aborts about 9% through saying the drive is no longer available. I’m currently doing a full format of the stick rather than a Quick Format to see if that makes a difference.

Eric

Might need to download the iso file again or perhaps you see if the usb stick can be formatted in Windows to show it is not defective. It is just hard to say, but a new iso file download is easy to try first.

Thank You,

Just to be clear… You are trying to install to this stick? Not write the image to it!

Thanks again JD. Should I download the 4.7GB DVD image or some other one?

I have the same doubt, I guess.

There is no point in writing the live install image (with imagewriter or
equivalent) in a stick bigger than one gigabyte, because the rest of
the space is not used (unless the image supports hybrid mode; I’m not
sure it does).

Certainly the full install image, the old DVD, only uses about 4.7 GB,
the rest is unused.

On the other hand, a install stick (one of the above) could be used to
install Linux on a 128 GB stick, but this is way different. It certainly
can not be done with imagewriter nor equivalent, has to be done with the
yast installer.

And it is not trivial to ensure that it only uses the stick and it
doesn’t install grub to the main hard disk.

If you want to run openSUSE from the stick, you have to install to it.
Take an 8 GB stick, use imagewriter to write a Live ISO to it. Boot from this stick, install on the other. Make sure the bootloader is installed on the stick you install openSUSE on.
Basically that’s all.

Yes, it supports hybrid mode. That was a source of problem through the Beta1 release, and with 32bit also for RC1. But it seems to be doing fine now.

For the record, I use a 4G USB for live distros. And I use an 8G USB for the DVD isos. I also have an 80G USB available (an old IDE drive in a disk enclosure) which I use for various testing.

Oops. Misdirection. I was thinking in terms of 13.1. My best recollection is that the 12.3 live USBs did not support hybrid.

That’s what I thought. I have used the rescue image (xfce) and it did
not actually save things. Unless you have to do something to activate
hybrid mode :-?

On 13.1 I have not tested this.
