I just quit smoking. Anybody want to join me?

Congratulations, keep it up, I’m sure it will get easier

it will continue getting easier…EXCEPT for those bumps…they WILL
come…they sneak up on you…one minute you think this gonna be
easy and then the next you are ready to KILL someone!!

always remember that you DESERVE to be the non-smoker that you
are…the current pain/frustration is brought to you by the nicotine
pushers…do not let them have their way…

why should you?

Because smoking is goooood…

sorry to hear you have given up on life and freedom from addiction…

i also had a 3 packs a day (unfiltered) habit…

quit in '94 and REALLY happy i did…

good friend of mine died of lung cancer on March 3, 2006…far too
young…and far too painful.

Stopped a dozen years ago, after a slight heart problem - that is, as slight as a deadly condition can be.

I kept one unlit cigarette I could put between the lips or smell the tobacco, until it grew mold.

It took about an year to stop craving for a smoke, although the crave diminished with time. At this time other people’s cigarette smoke slowly changed from evocative to disgusting.

Also it’s three times easier if you stay away from other smokers (and booze).

And yes, if you stop smoking you’ll probably gain weight, and if you start smoking again you won’t loose it. Anyway it’s better to be a (not-so-much) fat non-smoker than a slim cancerous corpse.

I quit in 1998 after 20+ years of smoking. I know this is a cop out, but I started using smokeless tobacco which has it’s own health risks…but by golly my lungs are clear !!rotfl!

sorry to hear you have given up on life and freedom from addiction…

Aw, that’s cute.

No, actually it’s just wrong and slightly arrogant too. You have decided to give up smoking, and I respect that, because it is a good thing to live healthy, and I also respect the fact you made it, but claiming that I “gave up on life” is just snobbish. I’m not committing suicide and have some years left, smoking or not.

It’s as if I’d say to a non-vegetarian: “I feel so sorry to see you are willing to risk an agonising death from bowel cancer just to get your belly filled, and it surprises me how such a seemingly nice person is willing to let generations of cows, pigs and chickens suffer their whole life just so you can have your cheap snacks…”

Sorry for OT.

you have given up the chance to be nicotine addiction free…this
thread is about supporting and offering hope to some fellow addicts
(practicing and not) who have not given up…

your post offers no hope and is entirely contra to what is going on here…

if you wanna discuss levels of personal arrogance we could start with:
Explain how your dropping “Because smoking is goooood…” opinion
into this thread could be considered anything other than “just wrong
and slightly arrogant too”…

as i have no driving need to do that here (or anywhere actually),
would you like to continue via PM?

palladium

would you like to continue via PM?

Yes, I would. But there’s no way to post a pm to a “guest”.

My first comment was meant as a cenotaph (hope it’s the right word), an example of how cigarettes will satisfy you even when you know they will kill you (and therefore should have been quoted fully by you). I totally support the intention of this thread and are happy to see it actually helps others to stay away from smoking.

You got that right, guys have you heard about bidis? I heard it could help your smoking habits, any thoughts?

in what way might they be helpful?
i ask because it seems to me that the habit can only be broken by
withdrawing from the addicting effects of nicotine…and, since bidis
(aka Beedi) contains the addicting drug–“they deliver more nicotine,
carbon monoxide and tar,[5] as well as carrying a greater risk of oral
cancers.” [cite: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beedi>] what can be
gained by switching from ‘fine’ Virginia tobacco in a smelly Winston,
to a hand made “bidi”?

you have a PM…

Best way to quit is just call it quits. Cold turkey.
Done it 8 years ago.

@palladium: thought beedies are herbal, a friend of mine suggested it and showed me this site USA Pure herbal beedies : give up tobacco don’t stop smoking!. It says it could help nicotine withdrawal. Does anyone tried this before or heard of it, I just need more thoughts from these.

Epic fail on my part! I made it about a week and a half before withdrawal symptoms got the best of me. :frowning:

Oh well, I’m not going to beat myself up over it. The only thing to do is to try again.

I’ve ordered one of those electronic cigarettes. Will give quitting another try when it arrives in 6-8 business days.

Either I’m not as tough as I thought, or I underestimated the hold tobacco has on me. Probably a little of both.

If only you could convert the courage to post this into persistance in quitting you would be there…

One thing I can tell: all these tricks and helpers will not do anything. Quitting is a boolean thing, you do it or you don’t. Electronic devices, pills, herbals, they will not help you at all.

NO! do not wait 8 days or 8 minutes…quit NOW…

the hold that the horribly addictive nicotine has on an individual is
very strong…

but, ask yourself how much is another 10, 20, 30 years of life worth?
and, not just 30 more years, but 30 that can walk up a hill with your
grandchildren and NOT have to sit down and ‘catch your breath’…

or, do like my dad did, spending his last ten tied to an oxygen bottle
24x7…(not to mention the $200+ per month just for one set of pills
to ‘help’ keep his lungs clear enough to breath with oxygen always
flowing through a clear plastic pipe…

It really didn’t take any courage to post my failure. I’ll pretty much tell anyone the way it is good bad or otherwise.

You’re right about gadgets, gimmicks, and such in that they won’t MAKE you quit. This decision to smoke or not is a personal one. I decided to give in to the withdrawal symptoms. I can’t blame the tobacco companies, Bic, or anyone else. It is all me.

I will quit. I’ve lost a battle, not the war.

However, I think gimmicks and/or gadgets can play a small roll in helping a person make it stick. It follows the same line as the “placebo effect” If you think it will help. It will.

I’ve taken some advice from becomeanex.org. They suggest that you pick a quit date sometime in the near future, and in the meantime track your smoking habits. Figure out what triggers a craving and plan ways to avoid triggers if possible. If a trigger can’t be avoided, at least you know it comming.

The spur of the moment decision to quit didn’t work out so well for me, I think I’ll take a step back and do a little planning.

I sure appreciate all the support I’ve gotten from all my friends here on openSUSE forums. You guys are great!

now THERE is something you can build on…and, imHo this is VERY
important…i mentioned it before but think i will again:

if is very necessary to view yourself as a non-smoker…

a non-smoker temporarily re-entrapped by a addictive drug…

an addictive drug sold to you by nicotine pushers…

an addictive drug most often delivered via breathing in the vapors of
burning tobacco…a process known to cause cancer and destroy lips,
tongues, larynx, trachea and lungs and result in a very painful and
bloody death…

such patients often drown in their own blood…

we all know a non-smoker like yourself is aways willing to do
everything possible to break the addiction…and stop funding the
drug pushers…
