… I know this may end up being very silly, but I have spent the past hour and a half reading documents trying to work something out… I even looked for Youtube video demonstrations!
Of course, effort is no solution to ineptitude, so here I am…
I just upgraded from 11.3 to 11.4 by performing a clean install, and have been trying to connect to the wireless router with no success.
Everything looks extremely foolproof… but when I enter the (correct) network key (with the correct encryption method) in KNetworkManager’s ‘Secrets for x’ window, the window simply disappears, the network manager switches from ‘awaiting authorization’ back to ‘not connected’, as if I never typed in the key. There is no prompt, error notice, etc.
I tried switching automatic connection on and off to no avail.
I did run a wire to the router and checked the key and other settings. Everything seemed well. More importantly, everything seemed as it was in 11.3, and I do recall that 11.3 wireless ‘simply worked’ straight out of the box…
This is the AP I am attempting to connect to, if the information would help… (though it is likely that I am making much more simplistic, not particularly technical mistakes…):

Hi cometbah
Maybe you should consider using the Gnome NM interface for now:
Gave up Knetworkmanager. Made Networkmanager-GNOME work on KDE4!
Might be worth letting us see the
/sbin/lspci -nnk
wirless info
have you tried switching to the plasmoid networkmanager?
@cometbah, if successful with the Gnome nm-applet in KDE4 Gave up Knetworkmanager. Made Networkmanager-GNOME work on KDE4! , please report.
Thanks.
Update:
There was an automatic update package available this morning, and the wireless spontaneously connected a little while after the update was completed (I left it on automatic). This may or may not have been a coincidence.
It has been working for the entire day. However, there had been occasional bursts of failures (took a refresh or two to get to some websites) that were not present on a Windows laptop connected to the same router.
/sbin/lspci -nnk output:

Have not yet tried Gnome.
How does one use plasmoid NM?
The drivers look in place
The plasmoid networkmanager is in the repos. Use Yast and look for plasmoid-networkmanagement
Install it and it removes the current network manager for kde
But once you reboot you need to add the plasmoid to the tray/panel
Thank you very much for all the help =)
Unfortunately, I never did get things working properly (hiccuping connection persisted), and have gone back to 11.3 for now…
I had similar problems when I was on 11.4 milestones, the plasmoid network manager interface replaced KDE Network Manager app, and didn’t actually work at all - wifi was broken, vpn control was broken etc. When 11.4 final release came out, wifi worked again, and a little later the vpn client did too. I still can’t get my 3G USB modem (aka mobile broadband) to work.
Ensure you have the network manager back-end installed, and is running, but kdenetworkmanager is removed entirely. You might end up having to “delete” your .kde4 directory (rename it out of the way to test this idea after logging out and logging in as a different user and becoming root)
