I installed beta5 on both my desktop and laptop, however with a difference in font-sizes. Both setups are similiar, I’ll list the similarities:
NVidia Driver 180.06, Resolution of 1680*1050, KDE 4.1.3, Fresh install(no imported settings or anything)
My desktop is fine as the fonts are of normal size, however my laptop is displaying everything huge! So I thought it might be the fonts themselves and tried changing it trough. KDE Menu > Configure Desktop > Appereance > Fonts
This leads me to some rather strange settings to make the fonts look of normal size… cause I got most set to 7 now, which normally should be TOO small.
My own font-size settings are only a partial answer, as for example OpenOffice still looks ridiculous even though I got the setting enabled for GTK application fonts to be the same as those of KDE4. Also the text in KMESS windows look far too big, and it’s a native KDE4 application afaik (Well not native to a kde4 install but you know what I mean).
So is anyone else experiencing this as well? Would be nice to know the cause before filing a bug report.
Well the strange thing is that my desktop gets it right by default, without any forcing. (As well as my ‘homeserver’, but that’s openSUSE 11.0 with KDE4.0)
So what do my laptop and your system have in common?
I also have that problem with my laptop (1600x1050) although I don’t mind because it makes things easier to read (but not as pretty).
I think the default DPI is calculated from the display size because you can use the option “DisplaySize”, in X, to indirectly set the DPI (in case the driver does not detect it correctly).
In my case, the flgrx driver says something like
(**) fglrx(0): Display dimensions: (331, 207) mm
(**) fglrx(0): DPI set to (128, 128)
