hp-setup gives error add user to sys group, however user is already added to group

Hi,

I have downloaded the latest version of the hplip software so the version I am currently using is 3.10.9.

When I do the hp-setup it identifies my printer hp 1212mfp and takes me the screen where I have to choose add printer. Now first I was getting an error saying please add user to %s group, then found out that the user should be assigned to both lp and sys groups. I have done the same.

After that I keep getting this error please add user to “sys” group, is this a bug in the latest version of hplip, I will try with one of the earlier versions as well just to be sure. If I remove the user from the lp and sys groups I again get the first error.

Please help.

When I installed 3.10.6 then I don’t get this error so I am assuming this is a bug in the current release 3.10.9

When I run the included 10.10.2 hplip in KDE, I run the command:

kdesu hp-setup

And this has been able to add all printers required so far for me. If you use KDE, you could try this menu Run Command yourself.

Thank You,

If you are using a repo version then the setup should be done during installation. If you downloaded it from HP you may have some manual tunning to do, see the install instructions from HP.

However I think jdmcdaniel3 is right, HP-Setup probably need root privileges to make the changes and convince itself they were made.

10.10.2? maybe you refer to 3.10.2 I have tried that and the problem I faced there with that version was that my printer was not detected which is a new HP MFP M1212nf, so using the version 3.10.9 it detects however it gave that error, I have tried the hp-setup as root user as well without a difference in output, but since I dont get that error with 3.10.6 release I am assuming it is a bug in the latest release.
