HP Elitebook 840 G1

I have performed a clean installation of LEAP 42.3 but it appears my sound button no longer works. I am running XFCE and when I click the sound button it does nothing, should toggle the sound to mute and on. The wireless button does work and when I press it wifi disables and enables. The function keys for sound also are not working. I can use fn f9 and fn f10 to control screen brightness but fn f6 and fn f7 do nothing for the sound.

When I run YaST2 hwinfo the sound shows as Haswell-ULT HD Audio Controller and 8 Series HD Audio Controller. Under XFCE | Settings Manager the Audio mixer shows HDA Intel PCH (Alsa mixer). I can right click the speaker and mute but there does appear to be something not quite right with my sound.

Any thoughts?

My first thoughts were kernel regression (eg hp-wmi hotkey driver), but you mentioned that the brightness keys still work so not so sure. I assume it is present?

cat /proc/cmdline

We’ll see what others suggest…

I meant to ask have you had a previous version on the laptop where the hotkeys all worked? It might be worth trying another live distro to compare hotkey functions perhaps.
