I am trying to install OpenSuse 11.2 on a Dell Poweredge r320 from the live CD, but the live CD’s kernel version does not have support for the PERC 710 raid controller. I was able to upgrade the kernel an r310 to 3.0.72, and after cloning the harddrive and installing on the r320, I was able to successfully boot.
I would like to update the live CD to use the newer kernel, and I believe the steps are as follows:
[ol]
[li]Build the kernel[/li]
[li]Download and extract kernel source[/li][li]Copy config from the live CD’s kernel by catting /proc/config.gz[/li][li]make oldconfig[/li][li]make vmlinux[/li][/ol]
[li]Make the initrd[/li][ol]
[li]This is where I am having the problem. Not sure how to do this for a live CD[/li][/ol]
[li]Update the iso[/li][ol]
[li]Copy the kernel to boot/i386/loader/linux[/li][li]Copy the initrd to boot/i386/loader/initrd[/li][li]Burn the iso to disk[/li][/ol]
I haven’t been able to make it through step 2. Can anyone help with this?
Note: For now, I have to use 11.2, and Suse Studio doesn’t support that version of the distro
Note: I couldn’t find anything on the wiki or in the forums that talked about updating the kernel. Sorry if I missed it.
I am not having problems building the kernel. I am having problems finding out how to take a build kernel, create the associated initrd, and storing it in the iso.

Oh.
No idea how to do that, sorry. I’m curious about the procedure, but
nobody has explained it at a place which I happened to read (or remember).
When asked, the devs tell you to use suse-studio, but that doesn’t help
you, 11.2 is not supported.

I have asked previously how to create or modify a live or a boot DVD,
got no answer. I was unable to find a documentation page on the subject
at opensuse.org.
You can search the mail list archive for similar questions.
The current answer is “susestudio”.

I have a similar question about updating the kernel on a 13.2 Live SDHC card
It seems that other software is updating but the kernel does not. The new kernel appears in the /boot directory but not on the BOOT partition.
It would still bve nice to be able to install to SDHC from openSuSE DVD (not LiveCD).
Any suggestions, HowTos, or links are appreciated.
I have searched with Google, DuckDuckGo, and (MoreS***) Bing to find solutions.
I’m running on a Lenovo Yoga 2 11 and Live seems to do very nicely - just want to update kernel.

Hi
Use Kiwi or on the openSUSE Build Service create an image, or even
easier use SUSE Studio to create your own updated bootable image… https://susestudio.com

Short answer: impossible.
Long answer: Nobody I know has explained how to do that, if at all
possible. The standard answer, as said before in this thread, is “create
your own ISO, using kiwi or susestudio”.

You can install from the DVD to anywhere that appears as a disk. Just
boot the DVD, and tell yast where to install.
Or you can convert any USB memory stick into a bootable install media by raw copy of the DVD image to the stick.
