How to set and unset default file associations of applications

Hi All,
At present, pdf files open with ‘Document Viewer’ by default. But it has been corrupted and does not print the pdf files. ‘Atril Document Viewer’ can open pdf files as well as print them.
I want to assign file association of pdf files to ‘Atril Document Viewer’.
How to remove association from Document Viewer and assign it to ‘Atril Document Viewer’.
Seek help for the above.

Which DE???

Hi,
Do you have a solution to this problem?

Which desktop environment are you using? You can usually find this in the settings. We can’t give you specific instructions unless we know what you are using.

Hi Yorimirus,
Thanks for responding.
I am using gnome with Leap-15.4.
Thanks,

Edit ~/.config/mimeapps.list and change relevant entries may be of help. Once I deleted this file to restore all default applications, but I don’t encourage anyone to do the same.

Found a post on the Fedora forum. Since PDF files have filetype as application/pdf, if I did not misunderstand it, changing default application could be achieved by

xdg-mime default atril.desktop application/pdf

Does this no longer work in Gnome?

  • Right-click on the file you want to open
  • Properties
  • Open With tab
  • select the default application you want to use…click “Set as default”**.

Hi hui,
It did work. Thanks a lot.

Why don’t you just upgrade to a supported version. 15.4 is
EOL, no more updates. See if 15.5 fixes the problem. EOL also means security risks.

Thanks Fraser,
I will be doing the upgrade as soon as possible
