how to manage boot order

Hi,
I had a dual boot win 7 and opensuse 13.1. every once in a while I change the boot order. No problem. Now I’ve upgraded to Opensuse 13.2, I boots to Suse, I want it to boot to Win7 without me being there to manually doing it. So, my question is, How do I change the boot order on OpenSuse? I’ve gone to Yast/bootloader but I can’t figure out how to change it. In KDE.
Thanks,
Ron

Why would you need to chnage it in KDE. Yast is where you can change the default boot order. KDE has nothing at all do do with booting

I think KDE was mentioned with the misunderstanding that the YaST interface might be different to Gnome functionality - which of course is not the case.

I was just letting you know that I am using KDE for info. As I’ve seen on many posts people are often asked what desktop they are using.
Thanks for your input.
Ron

Thank you I needed that.

can be manipulated(I think as I didn’t have a dual boot with windows for a long time) in yast there is boot loader and setting it up there the order of booting.

Yes I know but it’s now easily understandable there. That what I need the help on.

Yast (Control Centre)

  • System (Section)
    – Boot Loader
    — Boot Loader Options (tab)
    ---- Default Boot Section (box)
hit the down pointer on the right end of box then select from list

I would not fully agree.

The first question I would ask is if the system boots with legacy BIOS or with UEFI.

If it is UEFI (which is recommended on new systems in spite of Thorvald’s opinion about (U)EFI) then the boot sequence should not be defined in the Linux bootloader but in in the UEFI boot Setup.

IMHO the wishful behavior is that the system should (after a timeout for the selection) boot by default into the system which had been booted up last time.
Unfortunately neither UEFI nor GRUB(2) do have such behavior.

Every tab in Boot Loader is blank

Thats why i.m here. how do I find out which is in use? get to UEFI boot setup?
Thanks

It works for me (13.2 fresh install), so I’m guessing that something in your boot setup is weird. Are you using grub2? is the grub.cfg file in /boot/grub2? Is there any useful in /var/log/YaST2 (in y2log, for instance)?

How were you changing the boot order in 13.1?

In 13,1 I changed it in Yast. easy now in 13.2 confusing.

I think it using grub as that flashes on the screen during start up.

Yes, grub.cfg is there.

tjere is a large file in var/log/YaST2 (in y2log, for instance). but extremely large.

TO get to the EFI boot menu press F12 maybe it really depnds on th hardware and what exact EFI BIOS is in that machine. If in doubt or F112 or F10 does not work check with the maker

EFI BIOS or not, yast tabs should not be blank. Before digging further
suggest a re-install of yast!

OK, I’ll try that ?..How do I reinstall Yast only?
Thanks.

  1. Select -Yast, --Software Management,
  2. then Search (tab), and search for yast,
  3. look down list and on the line of yast2 and yast2-core,
right mouse click and select Update unconditionally for each,
  4. then select accept

if that does not update the tabs,
try 1.) & 2.) above again except this time
5. select Package (tab),
6. then select All in this list
7. then select Update unconditionally
8. then select accept

Thank keel. OK, I opened Yast/boot loader/ clicked on the down arrow by “don’t load bootloader” chose “grub” boot from MBR and now I can choose how to boot from suse or windows.
Thanks to all you
