And, there’s a much better solution than avidemux: Handbrake !!! As a graphical solution

I’d second the Handbrake recommendation if you want a graphical tool.
And,
I’m also pleased that awhile back ffmpeg resolved a not exactly rare but uncommon issue I ran up against… For awhile I was looking for alternative options (there weren’t many, gstreamer didn’t promise a fix and the other option was to install an ancient version of ffmpeg).
A year later, I re-visited the issue and found the problem was fixed which was cool…
But,
I’d still opt for command line tools if a large number of files needed to be transcoded exactly the same way…
If I had one real complaint about Handbrake it’s that it’s a memory hog, it doesn’t release memory after each task is completed in the queue, only after the entire queue is completed… And if your queue is a series of multi-gigabyte files, that’s a lot of RAM to be tied up.
