In KDE I can right click on the panel taskbar which opens the taskbar manager, set grouping & sorting to ‘manually’ which enables me to drag the taskbar button icons around. I am trying to do the equivalent in Gnome 2.32.1 on 11.4 but can’t find any preference setting. I can grab an icon, move it to the right or left, it moves but as soon as I release the button, it snaps back to its original position. Is there some setting I’m missing?
Hi
You should be able to right-click and select move the applets? Or are
you talking about the slab menu?
A screenshot may help…

I am talking about the panel at the bottom of the screen which contains the launcher, open windows, time, etc. If I right click on any blank spot in the taskbar section, I do not get a selection for moving applets. See attachment where I right clicked next to the Chrome icon at the bottom.
How do I insert a screenshot? Insert image wants a url and taking a screenshot, copying it to the clipboard and trying to paste it back here doesn’t work either.
Hi
Use suse paste, select image and also please ensure the expire is set
to never;
http://paste.opensuse.org/
You can drag and drop an icon from the menu system onto the
panel, then it’s right clickable to move. Else it sounds like it’s
minimizing to the notification applet, these are not moveable.

Here the screenshot. In the panel at the bottom, I am attempting to move the Chrome icon titled “How to rearrange…” to the left of the Thunderbird icon titled “[Inbox - dal@daltx.us…”. I can hold click on it, the little hand with a box outline pops up, but when I move it and realease it just returns to its original position. If I right click anywhere to the right of the open chrome application in the task bar I get a popup and select Properties which does not have any configuration for grouping or sorting ala KDE.
Hi
Ahh, ok understand now Well it should work (as in checked on SLED 11
SP2) and from here http://library.gnome.org/users/user-guide/2.32/windowlist.html.en
Now, are you running compiz (desktop effects), I wonder if a setting
there may be disabled?
