how to connect to local network?

I’m new at openSuSE, and I don’t know how to connect to my local network.
I don’t want to create a new one (the other PCs are still connected to each other) I only want to be able to be part of it again.
Where can I find the “available networks” or something like that?

Sorry, I’m a complete noob when it comes to network issues, so thanks in advance…

What are the Operating Systems installed in the other machines in the network? Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, etc?

Try the wireless forum and try the stickies at the top of that forum to
get started. Basically there is a Network Manager (two computers, one
kind of behind the other) icon in your bottom panel that will let you
configure wireless.

Good luck.

They have Windows XP… is that a problem?

Oh and, I checked the Wireless forum, but I really can’t get through all that, I don’t understand it :shame:
By the way, I don’t have wireless connection… the network is through my internet-cable (or I don’t know what’s its name). Or should it be the same to configure?
And the internet is working fine… I get it from one of the PCs in the network… but I don’t know how can I get in the network so that I can share files for example.

We needed to know the operating systems in your lan to find the best solution for your needs, in your case you will need samba to share files, but first you must setup your network, that is, the machines in the same netmask and in the same network and workgroup.

run these command in windows xp

ipconfig /all

and this one in opensuse

ifconfig

and post the results

you must check what is the workgroup in your windows pc

start-my pc-properties-pc name-domain

in opensuse - yast- network services - samba - identities - Name of workgroup or domain

post the results

How many linux boxes and windows boxes are in your network?

Ran the command on one of the Windows-PCs
Unfortunately, all the Windows PCs have Hungarian installed… so I tried my best to translate it

In Windows, the name of the workgroup: IRODA

In Linux, in Samba, I set the workgroup to IRODA, and it asks for the user name and the key… the problem is, on windows, it didn’t ask for a user name, only for the key… where can I find out what my username is?

Oh, and there are 4 Windows PCs and one Linux (mine) in the network…

Thanks in advance, hope this was helpful for something…

Try to follow the tutorial on Samba:http://opensuse.swerdna.org/suselanprimer.html and if you have questions ask them here. Someone will help you, most of the time swerdna, who wrote the tutorial.

Your network setup is ok, now you have to go to set up samba, Just remember that all the pc must have the same username, and check swerna site for the configuration of a stable network browsing.

Samba and Windows XP SP3 - openSUSE Forums

in that thread I have posted a working example of a smb.conf file for a workgroup.

this file is located at:

/etc/samba/smb.conf

and you can edit it with vi or kwrite.

Remember to open samba server and netbios server in your firewall
