How to add exception to Firewall?

I’m using Vuze to download my bittorrent files. However for it to be able to connect properly, I have to stop the firewall. How can I add an exception for Vuze (or maybe it’s necessary only for the port(s) it uses?) in the Firewall?

With my little knowledge, I don’t think you have to stop firewall. You can configure it. You can add ‘custom rule’ for Vuze or add it too ‘allowed services’. I never used Vuze, so not exactly sure how to doing it. Firewall can be configured from YaST, ‘Security and Users’ and then ‘Firewall’ menu.

The firewall is going to have to be stopped. Of course, when you hit “apply”, it will do it for you, AFAIK.

You can choose from some pre-selected services, or choose the “advanced” button under “Allowed services”. You can then add ports (or port ranges) for tcp or udp.

Vuze is a torrent. I use Ktorrent and have to open up two ports in SuSEfirewall2. Plus arrange port forwarding in my router. I wrote that up here:

It might be useful because Vuze and Ktorrent are pretty much the same thing I suppose. But Vuze might use different ports, however the principles should apply.

  1. Open Yast
  2. Goto SEcurity and Users
  3. Select Firewall
  4. Select “Allowed Services” from left hand pane.
  5. In bottom right hand corner, click on Advanced
  6. Under TCP ports, enter 49698. Click Ok, Next, Finish. As a side note, if you have to open more ports, you can enter the ports under TCP separated by spaces. Port ranges can also be specified. E.g.
    49698 5000:5200 6000
    will open port 49698, all ports from 5000 to 5200 and port 6000.
  7. In vuze, set the port to 49698 if it is not already set to this port.
  8. If you are using a NAT router, you will have to open the port 49698.
