How do you run live from the Tumbleweed install DVD

How do you take the installation DVD and run it live rather than do an installation. (I’ve tried searches, but they bring up the live CD and then say to use the installation DVD, but don’t say how to do it.) When booting from the DVD, there is an option for “more options” and under that is boot linux. Is that the way to boot live rather than install?

While I’m at it, should I put Tumbleweed on a thumb drive or will the performance from the DVD be the same?

The DVD downloads do not include a live version. You need to choose a live iso from http://download.opensuse.org/tumbleweed/iso/

Under that “more options” there is a choice for “rescue system”. That gives a command line boot for repairing your system. However, as said by peteh100, it isn’t a live Tumbleweed. For that, you should download the live media.

You could. Running from a USB should be faster than running from a DVD. But it will still be slower than running a system fully installed to hard drive.

To add a bit, apart from a live iso image IMHO being the best option you have:

  • These images are persistent, i.e.
    – you can update them
    – as long as the USB sill has space left you can extend the install with repos/packages.
  • These days 128GB USB 3.x SSD’s have become quite cheap, IME ideal for portable installs. Needs USB 3.x on the machine itself though.

Now that I read this

Please be aware of the following limitations of the live images:

  - They should not be used to install or upgrade Tumbleweed. Please use the [Tumbleweed media](https://software.opensuse.org/distributions/tumbleweed) instead
  - They have a limited package and driver selection, so cannot be considered an accurate reflection as to whether Tumbleweed will work on your hardware or not

I understand why the full DVD is preferred.

I have a small 128G SSD that came with the notebook. I was saving it as my windows spare. (I dual boot). But I guess I can copy the data off that to a large thumb drive, then put tumbleweed on the SSD. I want to evaluate the performance of the notebook user Leap 15.1 versus tumbleweed. My installation of 15.1 is really hacked to get opensuse to run on this Lenovo T485, so the question is would just going to Tumbleweed be better.
