As Romanator describes, plus you can install specific plasmoids/widgets for each “activity” desktop, which is particularly useful with the Folderview plasmoid. Be warned though, “activities” can be hair-raisingly buggy (much of the time it works, then you get screwed-up desktops, YMMV of course).
A slightly different procedure is to have only one desktop/workspace and switch between the activities instead. That is less buggy in my experience but the problem there is the Activities plasmoid for switching between activities: unlike the virtual desktop switcher, it takes up loads of space on the panel and cannot be configured to behave itself.

If you running compiz, you will loose the desktop icons…
Start the CompizConfig settings manager, and go to the wallpaper
section and add your selection of backgrounds. Then start gconf-editor
and apps->nautilus->preferences and uncheck ‘show_desktop’
Logout/login and you will have different desktop wallpapers.
