Hi, I have OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on VMware and Windows 10 Host. I am trying to update OpenSUSE. When I go to Settings > Details > About, I try to update and it says “Unable to get list of updates for refresh: Download (curl) error for http:// etc…” Sudo zypper update works fine. Zypper dist-upgrade gives an error “Media source ‘cd:///?devices=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-VMware_Virtual_IDE_CDROM_Drive_10000000000000000001’ does not contain the desired medium
Please insert medium [openSUSE-20180812-0] #1 and type ‘y’ to continue or ‘n’ to cancel the operation.” I read this is a problem with using a disk DVD instead of connecting to OpenSUSE. I would like to set it up to not need the DVD Disc. Also, under Settings > Wi-Fi, it says “Please use YaST2 to configure your network.” My PC is on Wifi but I think VMware always shows it as Ethernet anyways. So how do I setup YaST2? Internet works fine. Everything on the internet I read just says how to set the IP address and Subnet Mask. Nothing else on setting up YaST. I would like to use DHCP instead of a new IP address. Can anyone help me setup and update OpenSUSE? Please reply. Thanks
Hi, me again. I tried a physical DVD of Tumbleweed and “dist-upgrade” worked. Details > Update says I don’t need updates. No updates available. So does anyone know how I can get this to where I don’t need my physical DVD? And what should I use for “sudo apt-get upgrade”? “sudo zypper upgrade” doesn’t work. Or what about “sudo apt autoremove”? I’m new to OpenSUSE. Thanks
I amlways use yast2 for everything i do. creating a network is really simple, depending on if you want a wireless or wired network. which network are you using so i can help further
Hi, thanks for your reply. I am on Wifi. Not Ethernet.
It is not quite clear to me what you are doing and what your problem is. Your title says
How do I configure network with YaST2?
My answer would be: it is a GUI program and you follow what you see. When there is something you do not understand, ask for that. But I doubt anybody here is going to take you by the hand and goinf step by step through it. So start doing it until you got stuck and then come here and explain how far you got and what you are nor sure about as next step.
Then you have a srory about updating that I can not follow.
There is but one correct method to update a Tumbleweed installation:
zypper dup
Thus when you did other wise, first do a zypper dup before you test things.
- Have a look at your networking configuration for the VM
- When installed in a VM, openSUSE’s wicked networking service should set up the bridged device with DHCP, no wifi needed, see 1
- You can point at the downloaded ISO, instead of a physical DVD drive.

Since it appears that the @OP is new to openSUSE (apt-get update?) he
will need a bit of hand-holding.
I would further recommend that he start with Leap15 instead of Tumbleweed.

Before attempting to upgrdade TW, remove the repo that points at the install medium. If not clear, post output of
zypper lr -d
between CODE tags, the # in the layout ribbon.
Hi, I’m back. I was busy. I don’t think I need to configure YaST2 to continue with my updates on Tumbleweed. Firefox works fine, I no longer get the error when checking for updates in Settings (It says software is up to date), “zypper dup” works fine and says “nothing to do.” I wanted to setup YaST because I was getting an error in “Settings > Detail > About” update, but now that works fine. So I might not need YaST anymore. Does that make sense? My VM is on NAT and DHCP. How do I point to my OpenSUSE ISO instead of my physical DVD? Connect it in VMware settings (CD/DVD IDE)? I’ll check back later. Thank you for all the help.
DO NOT, repeat DO NOT, use anything but zypper dup. NO YaST, NO updater applet, these are going to cause trouble. It’s part of Tw’s nature as a rolling release in the model openSUSE has developed: Pre-release - do openQA testing - release. This means Tw is released over and over again. The only way to keep that consistent is by zypper dup.
In VMware, you can add the ISO as a virtual drive.
And, as an advice: Please stick to one topic at the time. And check which subforum it would best fit in. Try to structure ( bullet lists etc ) info. Provide real output, and do so between CODE tags, the # in the editor layout ribbon
Thanks for the reply. I will start using only zypper dup. I chose Tumbleweed because I read Leap is only updated once a year and I like to update once a week for fun. Is it prerelease? Like a preview? Should I stop using update in “settings > devices > about” on my Ubuntu and Mint VM’s? Only use update from the command line? I never have problem with my two other VM’s. Thanks again
Amen on updating Tumbleweed, it should be done only by the command “zypper dup” and not by any other method.
As for mounting the VMware ISO,
Typically a virtual CDROM should already be set up as part of the install (It’s very unusual for any VMwre Guest to be installed except from an ISO. Only mobile versions like those released for RPi (and other mobile devices) and images for containers begin as running images and aren’t “installed.”)
So, <don’t> mount or create new virtual CDROM devices unless there is a good reason to, a device should already exist.

Ok, I will do that. I’ll mark this solved. Thanks
