I am running OpenSuse, formerly 11.2 but just updated to 11.3, on an HP/Compaq Pavilion.
No clue what hardware I have as this unit more or less fell into my lap - just trying to clean it up a bit.
I am fine to erase the disk and start over - but can’t get out of Gnu 0.97 except to reboot, which just puts me back into GNU 0.97.
My message is Minimal BASH-like linke editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lsits the possible completions of a device/filename. ]
It doesn’t, really. I’ve done a few things and found that there were installs on (HD0,2) but when I try to access them, I get “file not found” or “does not exist”
Any info - I am trying to get this bootable so I can just trade it in!

I don’t know, but if this is a new PC to you, perhaps you do not care about any messed up software it may contain and should consider installing/reinstalling openSUSE 11.3 on this PC? You may even need to remove all existing partitions so openSUSE can have a fresh start. Here is the link to the CD/DVD download site.
Yes, that would be fine - however, I can’t get out of Grub! Any ideas how I can even reformat it? I’m quite fine to remove everything and start from scratch.
(Just sad - finally got 11.2 working, and my wireless connecting … but that’s obviously gone to the dogs now!)
How can I get OUT of Grub and into a format disk area? I’ve gotten into the BIOS setup utility, but nothing there for formatting…
I’ve downloaded the 11.3 and will burn it to CD (no DVD’s) but not sure if running this will clear the old files?
I appreciate your quick response, even on Christmas Eve - thanks!

Yes, you need to download and make the openSUSE bootable CD or DVD and boot from this disk. In your BIOS setup, make sure that the CD/DVD drive boots first before your hard drive. Most all BIOS’ have a way to do this, but the exact way varies a lot and so it is very hard to proved precise instructs for your BIOS setup. Once you boot from the openSUSE CD, there will be an option to manually edit the partitions where they can be deleted. You could also decide to download the GParted CD which would allow easy removal of all existing partitions, then when booting from the openSUSE disk, you could just take the default install. Download the GParted iso from here:
Well, I have set it so the hard drive boots first, but it refuses to do so. Every time I end up with the grub> running. I am thinking of just trashing the whole computer at this point, as it is incredibly frustrating!
In fact, I actually DISABLED the hard drive and adapter and it still runs through to Grub - bypasses hard drive completely. I hear it whir around, but nothing starts up.
Well, if you want to boot from a CD/DVD it must be first in your BIOS. If you see grub load at all it means that it is actually booting OK from the hard drive, it is just that nothing Grub is looking for to load can then be found. This just means that openSUSE needs to be reloaded and to do so, you need to be able to boot from the CD or DVD first that you download and make. Don’t forget that many Linux magazines also include Linux boot disks. A simple trip to the book store might find you an openSUSE 11.3 boot disk.
I dug up my 11.2 LiveCD. Apparently something is going on in my computer, as it has maxed out its memory and etc. etc. May just have to scrap it
It has had a long and useful life …
Thank you again for your help and advice! Have a great holiday -

Well, that does happen to older computers. Sorry to hear that you think some hardware has went bad. Good luck and let us know if we can help in any other way.
