HELP!! MD5SUM CHECK .iso file

Hello everyone, as you can probably tell from the username im completely new to Linux. After reading the ‘NEW User - Suse-11.3 Pre-installation Guide’ I was completely baffled and confused when i reached steps 2 and 3 on checking the MD5 SUM of an .iso file, ive never heard about it before and after several searches on both google and the forum im still none the wiser about this subject, as alot of technical jargon is used which just confuses, if someone could explain what i have to do to verify my .iso file and perhaps give me a step by step guide in plain english on how to do this that would be very much appreciated, thanks everyone.

Hash: SHA1

First download the md5 checksum file, then download winmd5sum
(http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/winmd5sum_portable) if you use
windows and then use it to calculate the md5 hash of your downloaded iso
file, once you have it, compare it with the hash on the file downloaded

thanks again, do i just paste one of the above codes into the ‘compare’ field?

ok checksums are the same thanks for your help.

Ryan

I’m not clear if you are doing this in windows - but run the md5 check on the .iso and it will eventually spew out a code like I quoted.
Just compare what it spew out with the appropriate one above.

Once it’s burned, (slowly) check the burned disk like this:

Go back to the download page and select the same DVD type as you did before

  • then in stead of clicking ‘Download DVD’, go down the page to ‘Verify your
download’. The ‘md5 checksum’ link should give the correct file for your
    image.
