In my quest to compare CrossOver games and Cedega, I have noticed that the Cedega community doesn’t seem to be what it was a few years ago (when it comes to their own forum, news from the developers and such).
I get the feeling that it takes several days before you get a response (if you get any at all), when the codeweavers team seems to have a more active user community and answering questions on the forums themselves.
I mean, I guess most of us agree that the community support is an important part in the Linux world (why would we be here otherwise ;)), and I feel it’s a shame that the cedega community seems dead.
Sure, their subscription model might not be the best, and I have heard that they don’t contribute as much back to the wine codebase as codeweavers does (this I can’t confirm though), but when it comes to the games performance they are taking the lead… so far.
No interest has shifted to codeweavers as they do give code back to wine, Cedega works like a pack of parasites and give little to nothing back.
Also I think playonlinux has taken up peoples interest.
Transgaming is more focused on the MAC cider then Cedega. To be honest i think they should cut the line of cedega all together, call it a loss, and use cider as sole platform for both MAC and Linux for commercial use, as many businesses want to have another corporation for support
As with cedega, I think it was lacking behind in many aspects comparing to Wine. For example, the installation looked messed up most of the times. Got the feeling they didn’t stay in line with wine.
I have no doubt that playonlinux will be a better product, staying open, active and in line with wine.
We very much appreciate your positive comments about our Forums–we feel like we have some of the best support people in the business, and we try to be responsive. I’ve passed this along to them. Thanks!
I for one will not use cedega again, the money you give to these folks and the problems that they have with the sites and the support. i do not think it is worth the money and i have had better luck with play on linux, i think with the work and the support this will be the better choice. (play on linux will be the top one before long ).
Cedega is a piece of **** and always has been, but as of late they just can’t keep up with WINE’s development pace and in many ways WINE works much better now. There simply isn’t any need for Cedega because between CodeWeavers and PlaysOnLinux, WINE has been greatly simplified. Heck, even bare WINE works great and has done what I needed it to do since 2007!
Cedega had it’s place a long time ago when they were WineX, they did some good work then for gamer’s.
Since then though they have lost the fight tbh, Wine has matured and has became the powerhouse windows compatibility layer. It’s pace in advance’s is hard to match. Play on Linux, Codeweavers and other’s have made it that way (please remember apart from Codeweavers thing’s like PoL are just graphical frontend’s to Wine, they do nothing that Wine can’t actually do itself). Codeweaver’s in the sense are the driving force for a commercial Wine UI app, Codeweaver’s do change code and do support the Wine Project as a whole.
PoL if they begin to support more game’s I think will lead in the UI frontend department for Wine. But at the moment they are small.
Has Cedega died… Well I’m not sure but they def focus more now on Cider than Cedega and this has led to a lot of the “community” becoming unhappy. It’s caused people like myself to stop using it.
The one’s saying about Cedega not giving back to Wine though, Cedega have NO reason to now, they have not been based on Wine since the departure of the whole WineX project. They use their own stuff that is no longer based on Wine. It’s caused a lot of grief with the change’s…
As far as it goes though Cedega if not dead already is dying, Transgaming’s focus on Cider has made it that way. They have pretty much forgotten about it’s paying customer’s using Linux and switched to the Mac user’s. They are slowly killing off Cedega and I just hope they look after the customer’s they have left (not likely from looking at past and present actions :()
