I switched my wife to Tumbleweed a while back and installed Cockpit on her machine. I really like being able to take a look at things without being in front of her computer. Remote administration is a huge plus. I’m liking Cockpit more and more.
I recently noticed this on the mailing list but haven’t installed it. I don’t need it today, but since it exists I thought some of you may have tried it, or want to keep an eye on it. There’s some user discussion about it not building on Leap and the service it uses, but nothing about if it actually works and is safe.
Taking into account that you took the title above from the web-site you link to, you are maybe not to blame. But this is NOT about a “Cockpit-bootloder”, but about “Cockpit-bootloader is an application for configuring the bootloader.” This might sound logical for those who know what Cockpit in general is used for, but I think it is confusing.
I requested such a module (as a YaST replacement) several weeks ago. Good to see that it has come to fruition. Had a brief look at it. No GRUB2 BLS support yet, but I suspect most are still using GRUB2 (EFI or BIOS) anyway. Work in progress.
Thanks. I’m sure there’s still a lot of people who have never heard of Cockpit.
Remember the conversation about people not liking losing Yast? I agree, I generally don’t like change unless it’s a considerable improvement. That’s Cockpit. Everyone said give it time and here we are. Bootloader management is important for the average user.
KDE moved the Show Logout Screen option on the right click context menu on the Plasma desktop. It was always the last option and I’d right click and hit logout, reboot etc. Now it’s the third one up.
I avoid the big menu as much as I can and it’s still driving me crazy. It’s been quite a while and I still head straight to the bottom of the context menu.
But with Cockpit, I installed it and learned how to use it. The truth is that I didn’t use Yast a lot and Myrlyn is great for software management. I do use Yast for kernel parameters. I just used the bootloader manager a couple of days ago when Malcolm said that the Intel Xe driver is working well for him. It is for me too, now.
The 20251212 update caused problems for me that appeared to be like the Kwallet issue a few months ago. I had Kwallet permission errors, qdbus errors and kwin errors.
One issue was freezing when resuming from sleep. I found that using commands issued with KDEconnect that I could reboot or shutdown etc. It was just Kwin that was frozen.
I never thought of remote management using Cockpit because I’m just not used to doing that. But I won’t forget again. It would’ve been a great troubleshooting tool to see what was going on live.
I guess I’ll install the Cockpit bootloader management plugin and see what it looks like. Surely they’ll fix any major bugs fairly quickly and somebody has to report the bugs.
