Normally you must add the Videolan repository to get libdvdcss to play movies and add the Packman repository to get most all other codecs required to get multimedia to work. You can find the repository list here:
Once you get everything working or almost working, I have a script that can be used to test a lot of your multimedia setup you read about about here. Go to my last message to get the most current mmcheck script file:
Normally you must add the Videolan repository to get libdvdcss to play movies and add the Packman repository to get most all other codecs required to get multimedia to work.
No, adding Videolan is not necessary at all - since mixing Videolan and Packman often causes trouble, one should avoid that in the first place. As mentioned in the how to you linked:
…so you won’t have to fiddle with potential package / compatibility-conflicts.
BTW: libdvdcss is not necessary to play movies, but to play DVDs with content scrambling encryption.
Sorry for being so fussy…
Edit:@patrick013 - it is not necessary to post the same problem →twice.
Hey it is OK to be fussy gropiuskalle, but I don’t think our guide asks you to get libdvdcss that way. I bet it could be changed to say that as that does sound like a very good idea to get just the one file you need from there. I think most everyone is going to want the ability to play a DVD if they have a DVD player I think. I watch a lot of movies on my system, but the most used to be on my Laptop when out of town and normal viewing at home was not on my computer way back when, but on a dedicated player, before I met SuSE.
well i tried a reinstallation still no go
where do i report a broken dependency on this ?
funny, worked yesterday before something else installed, games i think.
Is that the full output? That’s funny, because I don’t see any gxine there. Also note that the xine packages should be provided by Packman (if possible, for example ‘libxine1’, ‘libxine1-codecs’, ‘libxine1-gnome-vfs’).
Please show the output of
zypper lr -d
…and please put console-outputs in code-tags, so they are better to be read, okay?
Edit: Since many packages are marked as “(System Packages)” I suppose you have deactivated Packman (and other repositories). I just note that ‘libxine1-codecs’ was provided by Packman (hence the version number with the ‘.pm.’), but it does not match to the other packages. And as I said: ‘gxine’ is obviously not installed at all. What did you do with the repositories?
code tags ? don’t know those yet…here’s the output though, quite lengthy.

reinstalled gxine but it opens and shuts, using totem now till gxine fixed up.
was a newer version in the packman repo…still hangs up per below.

so I don’t know then, just hanging up the program.
Got that? In case of command line outputs, it’s much easier to read due to the fixed width font. It will also prevent funny smilies where no smilies should be (see your gxine output) and the parsing of URLs.

so yeah, gxine is still hanging up.
what should i do about the obsolete gstreamer dependency in the
previous post ? delete that gstreamer file with yast ?
must go to sleep here, I’ll look tomorrow for something.

zypper in libpng12-0
…but this one is hardly gxine related. try to find out where the gxine config files are and move them. But even that will most probably not solve your error, since…

Segfaults can have many reasons, for example bad RAM (do other apps crash on your system?) or bad code (although gxine seems to work okay for me).
trying out programs today…moreamp, xbmc, and gxine - hung up. but totem, lxmusic, and xnoise ran great.
gxine is my favorite one though. have to find a file search, thunar doesn’t. like to stay with gxine and
totem then. used to have realplayer hangup when nobody else’s did. but my windows XP on this machine runs
OK, just a little slow. great otherwise. some kind of virus too we’re not supposed to have possible.

Other operating system running okay does not tell you about the state of your RAM (Win and Linux have very different ways of allocating RAM and Linux usually is more fussy about bad RAM). You mention other applications causing trouble, in case they segfault as well, your RAM most likely is faulty. I recommend running a memtest over night (depending on the size of your RAM → 4 to 8 hours or even longer if possible. Even a single error means your memory needs to be replaced).
Please, post again the list of repositories (zypper lr -d) between code tags. Don’t add/remove repos
till this is solved, don’t install other things: it will confuse us.
I think I saw a factory repo, those are problematic.

(from 11.2 x86_64 “Emerald” at Telcontar)
I only have 1gb ram. Installed memtest86 to boot off of flash drive, which it did.
Booted off flash drive, ran 2 passes, 1 and a half hours, tested 188k to 1016mbs of ram, 2 full passes, various patterns during the test, with no errors reported. Jesus,
that should be sufficient.
Would you like to see terminal messages for the other two programs that hang up
before I delete them ?
