GUI blockiert, gnome-shell 100% CPU

Seit dem Upgrade auf LEAP 42.3 beobachte ich mehrmals täglich folgendes äußerst lästiges Phänomen:
Während des Arbeitens wird plötzlich die gesamte GUI unbedienbar. Der Mauszeiger lässt sich zwar noch normal bewegen, laufende Programme laufen weiter, aber kein GUI-Element reagiert mehr auf Klicks oder Tastatureingaben.
Mit Strg/Alt/F1 kann ich auf eine Textkonsole wechseln, die auch normal bedienbar ist. Mit top sehe ich, dass ein Prozess namens gnome-shell einen CPU-Kern komplett auslastet, d.h. laufend zwischen 98 und 100% CPU beansprucht. Ansonsten funktioniert das System in der Textkonsole völlig normal. Wenn ich mit Strg/Alt/F7 auf die GUI zurückwechsle, ist der Zustand dort unverändert.
Dieser Zustand hält meistens ca. 5-10 Minuten an. Danach funktioniert das System wieder, als ob nichts gewesen wäre - bis zum nächsten Mal.
Ich habe bisher weder eine Regelmäßigkeit gefunden, wann das Problem auftritt, noch einen Weg, den Zustand zu beenden - außer geduldig abzuwarten, bis er von alleine aufhört.

Irgendeine Idee, was das sein könnte, wie ich der Ursache auf die Schliche kommen und besser noch, sie beseitigen kann?

Hätte mich auch gewundert. Der gnome-shell Prozess, der vorübergehend 100% CPU frisst, crasht ja nicht, sondern läuft hinterher wieder normal weiter. (Erkennbar an der PID.)

Tracker dürfte eigentlich keinen Mucks mehr machen. Das war eins vom ersten, was ich nach dem Upgrade stillgelegt habe, da er mein System permanent durch systemd-coredump Prozesse ausgelastet hat:

Ich würde behaupten nein. Ich habe 6 GB RAM, der Swap ist quasi ungenutzt, und ich höre auch keine Festplattenaktivität, während die GUI eingefroren ist.
Außerdem ist das Fehlerbild dafür eigentlich eher untypisch.
Das System hatte früher nur 2 GB RAM und damals tatsächlich gelegentlich angefangen zu swappen.
Das sah ganz anders aus.
Da habe ich in top eigentlich nie einen User-Prozess mit 100% CPU-Last gesehen.
Und die GUI war dabei schon noch bedienbar, nur halt sehr, sehr verzögert.

Beim selber weiterstochern habe ich in .xsession-errors-:0 mehrfach diese Meldung gefunden:

Leider enthält die Datei keine Zeitstempel, so dass ich nicht sicher sagen kann, ob und wie die Zeitpunkte, zu denen diese Einträge geschrieben wurden, mit den gnome-shell-Hängern zusammenhängen.

Was für Grafikkarten mit welchem Treiber laufen dort:

Da läuft eine alte nVidia GeForce 6200 TC mit zwei Monitoren, beide per DVI angeschlossen, Auflösungen 1680x1050 und 1280x1024.
Als Treiber habe ich einfach den von Leap 42.3 standardmäßig angebotenen nouveau übernommen, also keinen proprietären nVidia-Treiber installiert.

Hast du es mal mit dem G02-Nvidia Treiber versucht?

Nein, das sagt mir nichts.

In einer früheren Suse-Version hatte ich eine Zeitlang den proprietären Treiber direkt von Nvidia genutzt, weil nouveau noch keine vernünftige Dual-Monitor-Unterstützung hatte.
Bei 13.x und Leap habe ich immer nur nouveau genutzt.

Was ist der G02-Treiber? Wo bekomme ich den her? Ist der proprietär oder Open Source? Im Suse-Wiki finde ich dazu nichts.

Die Seite kenne ich, aber G02 ist da nirgends erwähnt.

G02 ist einfach eine bestimmte “Generation” des proprietären NVidia Treibers, nämlich Version 304.xxx.

Binde einfach das NVidia Repo ein und installiere den Treiber wie beschrieben, das sollte dann automatisch den G02 Treiber wählen.

Die entsprechenden Pakete heißen eben nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default, nvidia-computeG02 und x11-video-nvidiaG02 (im Gegensatz zu …G03 und…G04 für die Versionen 340.xxx und 390.xxx für neuere Grafikkarten).

Dann werde ich das mal probieren.

Jetzt bin ich endlich dazu gekommen, den proprietären Treiber auszuprobieren.
Ich bin gemäß der Anleitung zur manuellen Installation https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:NVIDIA_drivers#openSUSE_Leap vorgegangen.
Das Ergebnis ist kurz gesagt katastrophal.

Schon beim Start steht die Maschine minutenlang mit schwarzem Bildschirm und hochdrehendem Lüfter, bis der Login-Bildschirm erscheint.
Nach dem Login wieder minutenlang Volllast mit Mauszeiger auf schwarzem Bildschirm, dann erscheint kurz der Suse-Hintergrund, verschwindet wieder, erneut einige Minuten Volllast, bis der Desktop zum zweiten Mal erscheint und dann bleibt - jedenfalls solange ich nicht versuche etwas auf der Maschine zu machen.
Der Versuch, die Bildschirmeinstellungen zu öffnen, führte aber direkt wieder zum Einfrieren des Desktops.
Beim Wechsel auf die Textkonsole mit Alt/Strg/F1, um mit top zu schauen, was die Maschine so auslastet, stürzte dann die komplette X Session ab und ich hatte nach dem Zurückwechseln mit Alt/Strg/F7 wieder den Login-Bildschirm.

Aktuell ist die Maschine per Textkonsole oder ssh normal benutzbar, die X-Oberfläche ist unbrauchbar.

Gibt es irgendetwas, was ich noch ausprobieren sollte, oder gehe ich besser gleich auf Nouveau zurück?
