grub loading... error 22 on fresh DVD install of 13.2 tumbleweed 12/01 (64 bit)

I have an older ASUS MB (m2a-vm hdmi) without EFI firmware. Opensuse 12.1 was running on it fine. Decided to do a clean install of 13.2 from the latest tumbleweed DVD iso.

There are 3 disks, I am installing on sda. Deleted all partitions on sda, created one 30G ext4 partition for ‘/’ (and swap is on sdc). Bootloader installation on MBR and sda1.

Bootloader install takes a long time (at least couple of minutes) and I know there is a problem there but no error messages. After reboot however, grub menu does not appear and I get error 22. Perhaps the old version of bootloader is still in MBR (and looking for the older partition number).

Any ideas ?

Yes, looks like it. It could happen if you installed new bootloader in partition without installing generic code in MBR.

The “install generic code in MBR” and set active flag on boot partition were both checked. I re-installed to make sure.

Are you sure your BIOS boots from the disk you install openSUSE on?

Good catch ! That was the problem and now it is fixed. I used btrfs as root partition and that works too, although ext4 appears to lead to a faster boot.
