GPU Temperature rises at idle

Hi guys

I have a AMD Base PC with a Radeo HD 6670 graphics card and an Acer Aspire 5738G laptop with a Radeon HD 4570 graphics card on which I have installed openSUSE Tumbleweed for the first time.

There is an objection that I raise with you.

When I do not use my computer for a while, after the lock screen appears or after the monitor turns off, the temperature of my graphics card starts to rise and at the same time its fan speed increases, while the CPU temperature is low and It doesn’t change.
But as soon as I login the system, the temperature starts to drop and the fan speed decreases.

I have the same problem with my laptop, and when the lock screen appears and the monitor turns off, its fan speed increases, but the cpu temperature is about 37 degrees and does not go higher.

Of course, I have to emphasize that this problem existed from the first moment I installed the openSUSE Tumbleweed.

I should add that before I chose openSUSE as my favorite distribution, I had Manjaro installed on my laptop, which I had the same problem with.

I just came to Linux from Windows 10 and I did not have such a problem in Windows.

Please help me solve this problem.

Thank You :revolving_hearts:

Have you, preformed the System Fan calibration in the UEFI/BIOS?

Hi
Yes I did.
As I said, I have no problem with Windows, only openSUSE.
The problem is with the graphics card, not the cpu or other fans.

As long as I work with the PC or Laptop, everything is normal and the temperature does not rise too high, and eventually it rises one or two degrees Celsius, which increases and decreases with increasing and decreasing working pressure.

This problem only occurs when the system is not used for a while and the monitor turns off, in which case the graphics card temperature rises 8 or 9 degrees Celsius.

I guess a bug in the driver or kernel raises the load on the GPU and increases the temperature and speed of the fan, which as soon as i log in, the GPU usage starts to decrease and its temperature returns to normal.

Has anyone had this problem?

Heared about the same problem.
Bug was in KDE or video drivers or …

Create bug report.
Try different DEs, etc.

You’re using GCN5 + amdgpu driver.
OP is using Terascale (1 & 2) + radeon driver.

Another reason: X11 vs. Wayland with some DEs.

When the problem occurs you could login remotely using ssh and take a look at what’s running with htop/top/ps etc. If you don’t have another PC, you could use a phone ssh client.

Actually, this rings a bell, I can’t find the forum post or email list, so from memory… Is the clock enabled on your lock screen? If it is, try turning it off, perhaps also turn off the media controls. I think you will find the setting under System Settings → General Behaviour → Screen Locking - Appearance Show Clock. It might not help, but it’s easy to try.

Hello all thank you for your help.

Hello, thank you for your response.
i’m using KDE Plasma desktop.

Can you tell me how to know what mode I am using?
How do I check and change what you said?

Thankful

Hi
Thank you for your help

This problem exists from the first moment of installation, I even tried with several different kernels, but there was.
I will try your suggested solution to see if I can get something.

Should I install an app in mobile for remote connection?

I have several PC’s available in my home network, so I seldom need a phone app, but in the past I have used connectbot on Android:

Something must have convinced me to use that particular app, but I can no longer recall why.

There were troubles with KDE in idle mode, AFAIR. Maybe you catch a regression.
Use OpenGL 3.1 renderer for KDE, not 2.0.
