(technically it’s not an air-gapped system, rather I’m trying to make a sort of portable “all-in-one” live USB that can work even if internet isn’t connected. Besides, my internet isn’t all that fast at ~1.7MB/s download)
So I basically have been fighting with this for the last 5-ish hours and I’m clearly nowhere near enough of a Linux guru to be able to figure this out on my own. I’m using an Xfce live ISO of Tumbleweed 20260531 that I had archived because anything newer since around mid June 2026 IIRC has broken dark mode on various GTK applications like gnome-system-monitor or “Mission Center” yet dark mode works great on the aforementioned 20260531 live ISO.
Thing is though, the included GPG key expired 2026-06-19. No problem, I force-install the RPM with a newer GPG key and have even verified it was present on the system.
…yet installing software from my local repository via zypper even with the corresponding flags to force and ignore GPG signing still throws up errors regarding NOTTRUSTED keys.
Here’s the entire terminal output of my process:

linux@localhost:~>
The only way I’ve managed to get this to work is to install something, anything via zypper with an internet connection present, and then subsequently installing anything from my offline repository will “just work” even if the internet is completely disconnected again.
As you can see at the output, not only your local repository is configured but also the standard openSUSE repos which need a network connection for update. If you want to use this system offline and only with your local repository, you need to remove all other online repositories.
Are you sure about that? Because I remember it “just working” in modern live ISOs as they come bundled with non-expired GPG keys, and even then those connection errors still show up but seem irrelevant to whether a package can actually install or not.
I can double-check it and give a terminal output if so desired.
Also, I suppose that an alternative solution would be to simply have working dark mode on a modern live ISO. The dark mode is literally the only reason I want to use a slightly older live ISO.
Good lord, how short is the edit window? It’s only been 18 minutes and it won’t let me edit my most recent reply…
Regardless, here’s the terminal output showing everything “just works” even without ignoring signing keys and despite the presence of the aforementioned “could not resolve host” repository errors due to being offline when using a modern live ISO, in this case 20261028 of Xfce Tumbleweed:

But, again, GTK(4?) applications like gnome-system-monitor and “Mission Center” are stuck in light mode and ignore dark theming on these modern Xfce Tumbleweed live ISOs
If nobody reports a broken build via bugreport, how should anybody of the maintainers fix an unknown issue?
Btw, the Live image is not a full image with all packages. Did you read the notification on the download page?
Live
Please be aware of the following limitations of the live images:
They should not be used to install or upgrade. Please use the installation media instead
They have a limited package and driver selection, so cannot be considered an accurate reflection as to >whether the distribution will work on your hardware or not
Kernel and initrd can’t be updated, so they shouldn’t be used as a persistent installation
Honestly it was so egregious to me that I couldn’t believe anyone wasn’t already aware of it. Also I figured it was either an Xfce issue or GNOME/GTK rather than openSUSE.
I’m not sure what bearing that has on the things described in this thread? Both things work in live ISOs, just not simultaneously (older live ISO has working dark mode but I can’t get a newer GPG key to work; newer live ISO has broken dark mode but newer GPG keys “just work” out-of-the-box)
I did install a local installation of Tumbleweed at some point back in spring, but it wasn’t very fun due to my slow-ish internet download and took like an hour to install. In the end I deleted it since the local installation didn’t behave any differently for my use-case (that being an issue I was having behaved the exact same on a local installation as it did on a live ISO)
There are quite some actual threads which explain how to delete an old signing key and reimport the refreshed one. As you use a Live ISO which is not intended for installation or upgrade, simply installing the openSUSE-build-key package does not work obvisiously. So after you have installed this package, you need to delete the old signing key and reimport the refreshed one.
List your gpg-keys: rpmkeys --list
Locate the key which matches the error output and delete it: sudo rpm -e gpg-pubkey-<here the key to delete from above list>
Refresh the metadada (have online connection for this step) and accept the new key: sudo zypper ref -f
But that defeats the purpose…? If I can have an internet connection, then I can just run sudo zypper install redshift-gtk and it’ll download and install the latest GPG key properly, allowing me to install any of my offline packages without issue.
My entire goal was being able to install certain basic programs and/or utilities without an internet connect altogether as is commonly missing on the likes of desktop test benches or systems dedicated to simply managing data disks or the like (especially when dealing with mechanical hard drives which can be slow - no need to spend hours tying up a primary PC or torturing your ears)
The internet connection is only needed for this single step to refresh the keys which takes 5 seconds. I don’t understand what you are arguing around here. In the above comments you already showed that it is possible that you can establish a connection even if it is slow. It is possible that the meta data refresh will take the new key from the newly installed key package. So simply try the described steps without internet connection if you want and report back here. If it does not work, establish the connection for 5 seconds, perform the described steps, disconnect. I only wanted to make sure that you get a new key at all. As you use your system in a non standard way, there is no description somewhere which you can handily read. I’m only trying to show you possible ways to get your unusual setup working.
@NM64 Have you looked at the Rescue CD, it runs XFCE. It’s all I use for trouble shooting. I install a few additional apps, kernel doesn’t update. Every now and again I just create a new image and install the few additional files I need.
I’m thinking the dark mode thing is a GTK regression since it’s rather peculiar that Xubuntu 26.10 has the same GTK version (3.24.52) as Xfce Tumbleweed 20260531 and Fedora 45, while modern versions of Xfce Tumbleweed have GTK v3.24.53. Sure enough, gnome-disks-utility is another key software that had she “dark mode” issue on GTK v3.24.53 but not on GTK v3.24.52.
I’m a hardware computer geek. My entire goal is something fully offline. My existing software utilities for test-bench stuff already fully works offline in live Linux ISOs or even Windows PE ISOs like Hiren’s BootCD PE. You cannot guarantee you can always have a connection - heck the built-in ethernet is dead on my go-to data management motherboard (an AM3 board with 4 RAM slots, ECC support, and integrated graphics - ain’t no way I’m paying out the nose for the equivalent of 24GB of DDR4 and a Ryzen Pro APU). My house isn’t wired for ethernet anyway and only wired for coaxial, and there’s only one coax in my “test bench” room which is often plugged into the PC I’m currently typing from. My wifi is located on the other side of the house and typically turned off because that’s infinitely more secure, few of my PCs even have wifi, I’m infinitely more focused/relaxed/calm if I can’t just pull out a smartphone and ADHD doom-scroll an hour away thanks to there being no wifi, and my retro Nintendo consoles don’t support secure protocols anyway (the DS, not 2DS/3DS, doesn’t even support WPA - it’s WEP or open)
If this “always connected” mentality is a core principle of openSUSE, then I’m glad I don’t use on any installed systems, because I want nothing to do with that and this whole encounter has soured my opinion on using openSUSE Tumbleweed as nothing more but an easy way to test newer Xfce versions (since I’ve no idea how to compile from source - again, I’m a hardware computer geek)
I thought Linux was the OS of freedom and “the user is king”, not “you will own nothing and be happy.” I might as well unsubscribe from notification this thread since it’s obviously not going anywhere…maybe I’ll get the courage to check back at some point (hopefully once it’s automatically been closed).
