google maps not loading

I am running 12.1_64 with KDE 4.7.4 and having a problem with google maps. Initially the page appears to load completely but then within about 2 or 3 seconds, everything except the actual map insert goes black.
The refresh instantly reloads the entire page but all except the map goes black again almost instantly.

I have the same issue on another unit running Fedora 16_64 with KDE 4.7.4.

Both have nvidia chips with proprietary drivers.

Any suggestions? KDE seems to be the common denominator here.

is “google maps” an application installed on your what(?): laptop,
netbook, desktop, server, ‘smartphone’ or what?

or is it a web based application you are accessing by using a browser?

i ask because http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Maps says it is a
technology and an application…but, i’ve not been able to find an
application i can install to verify your problem…

i find versions for Android, Blackberrys and other ‘mobiles’ but i don’t
find one for Linux…where did you get yours?

if a browser accessed application: what browser and version?

Sorry I wasn’t clear but it is the maps page at google.com.

Neither Firefox nor Chromium will work properly.

i have not seen the symptom you describe on my machine (but, i running a
different OS and KDE version)…and, i have not yet seen any other
forum user describe this problem–so, i conclude it is not widespread…

but, i find it VERY strange that you see it in both FF and Chromium,
and in both openSUSE and Fedora…

so, i suggest you first look at Firefox:

  • disable all add-ons
  • go Edit > Preferences > Privacy, and delete all cookies with the
search string of ‘google’ (you will find that the next time you go to
google you will have to log in, and reset preferences…but!)
  • shut down and restart FF
  • try maps.google again

if not, what happens if you turn off Desktop Effects?
any changes?

if not, use YaST to add a new test user…log out of the desktop and
then back in as the test user; launch firefox and go to the maps–any
change?

if not, then you must have a unique problem and i have to guess it
is due to something which is unique about your system(s)

so, what version of Firefox are you using??

have you ‘upgraded’ your kernel past that in the update repo?

have you ever installed anything from a Tumbleweed, Factory, unstable or
playground repo?

you say you have “nvidia chips with proprietary drivers” did you use an
openSUSE method of installing the drivers
(like:http://tinyurl.com/37v9y7m) or some other way? did you do the
“hard way” or a 1-Click? what graphic hardware and driver are you using?
are you also booting with the ‘nomodeset’ boot option?

are you having any other such video problems?

how did you get to 12.1? that is, did you do a format and full install
of 12.1, or did you “upgrade” from some previous version of openSUSE?
which, and how did you “upgrade”?

the /home your normal user uses, has it ever been used by or shared with
any other Linux distro?

a. have you ever seen maps.google function properly?
b. when did you first notice this maps.google problem?
what happened to your system between ‘a’ and ‘b’??

see, there are LOTS of variables the user can introduce which causes
their system to be so unique that it does strange things…and with
enough experimentation with potentially clashing mismatched software it
is safe to expect an unstable system…

if you boot and run from an openSUSE 12.1 Live KDE CD, and try
maps.google before doing any ‘customizations’ what happens?

Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
Deleting all cookies in Chromium and FireFox fixed the issue on notebook running oS 12.1.

On desktop, Fedora 16 did a major upgrade including kernel to 3.2.2 and problem seems to have disappeared as well.

Obviously an issue unique to my installations.

FWIW, google maps stopped working on one of my machines a couple of days
ago. Deleting all their cookies fixed the problem. I suspect they’ve
made changes, perhaps connected with their privacy whatsit.
