Google Earth crashes upon Startup

When I start up Google Earth, it loads to the point where I see the Earth, the tips window, and the image previews of places on it, then it spontaneously crashes. I tried doing this out of the terminal and I got this output:

Another crash happened while handling crash!

jared@linux-qtq7:~>

Do you have a working network connection?

Which version of google-earth do you have installed and where did you get it from?

Which version of openSUSE are you using, is it 32bit or 64bit?

Which graphics card/driver? Install “Mesa-demo-x” and run “glxinfo | grep render” to get the driver and check whether it is working.
Do you have the 32bit Mesa libraries installed if it’s a 64bit system? (especially Mesa-libGL1-32bit)

But your issue actually sounds like this:
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/earth/U8SlQy2nJLMDoes it work when you run it as root?

kdesu google-earth

Please note it is not recommended to run/use it as root though.

You could just use Google Earth 6 instead, that should work fine.

I have a working network connection, and I am running the 64-bit version of Google Earth on openSUSE 13.1.

I downloaded it off of Google’s website directly.

I have the right architecture MESA libraries installed, and running “glxinfo | grep render”

jared@linux-qtq7:~> glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) Sandybridge Desktop
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_packed_depth_stencil,
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_light_max_exponent,
jared@linux-qtq7:~>

I’ll look into that other forum - it works fine with the internet disconnected just like the other case. I may just run it under superuser for now.

Is there a 64bit version yet?
With Google Earth 6 the 64bit package is just a 32bit application as well.

Try to run it as root, see also my previous post again, I added a few things.

I edited it before I saw your post - it works just fine under superuser. Google’s website said I was getting the 64-bit RPM version. It also started OK the first time I used it then it crashed after I played around a little.

Ok, then it seems to be a permissions or configuration issue.

Try running it through strace to find out what fails exactly:

strace google-earth

Google’s website said I was getting the 64-bit RPM version.

Ok, I checked and it is indeed a 64bit application.

It also started OK the first time I used it then it crashed after I played around a little.

Then it shouldn’t be an installation problem.
Try removing the configuration. (the folder ~/.google-earth/ I think, at least that was with GE6)

Maybe related to issue within ~/.googleearth perhaps. You could try renaming it for test purposes at least, and then observe whether GE behaves itself when run as user again.

I removed the ~/.googleearth directory, and everything seems fine again… at least for now.

http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/485283-Google-Earth-7?p=2643340#post2643340 would suggest that the 32bit version might work better.

And also try this, as it could bne a conflict between your system’s Qt libraries and the ones that google-earth includes:
http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/485283-Google-Earth-7?p=2611672#post2611672

Thanks - if Google Earth develops an attitude again, I try both of those solutions.

Hi all,
just in this days I have upgraded to openSuse 13.2 64b. and I had problems on startup Google-earth 64b.
The program crash running like user or root.

BUT if I launch google-earth with option --help ( google-earth --help ) then run fine!! :open_mouth:
