Google Chrome 13 won't start

Hi y’all, I just installed openSUSE 11.4 on my Dell. Recently, I installed the google-chrome-stable .rpm, but when I go to the menu to open it and click on it, it doesn’t open! The icon near the mouse bounces a long time, then just stops! Can anyone help me?

The google-chrome rpms are pathetic; in that they do not list their dependencies. If you open a terminal window (e.g. Konsole) and run “google-chrome”, you will see what is missing, and you can use YaST (Install/Remove Software) to add the missing components. You may have to repeat this a few times until you get them all, especially if you are installing an i386 chrome on a 64bit openSuSE (so as to get the integrated Flash). I think that the most common missing package is “libpng12-0”.

The name of the program is google-chrome-stable, so

thomas@linux-b20j:~> google-chrome-stable
If 'google-chrome-stable' is not a typo you can use command-not-found to lookup the package that contains it, like this:
    cnf google-chrome-stable
thomas@linux-b20j:~>

EDIT: Ah Ha! installed that pkg, works perfectly now! Thanks!

No that is the package name. If you have questions about what program files are supplied by a package you can get a list of the files provided in the files tab at the bottom right of the Yast software management screen.

Flash works fine for me on my x86_64 Chrome install.

It does here as well, but I think eng-int is talking about running the 32-
bit Chrome on 64-bit openSUSE.

On my system it’s “google-chrome”, installed from the ‘stable’ package.

I was just pointing out that you don’t have to install 32-bit Chrome to get a working flash player.

Yes that was my intention. The reason being that the 32bit versions of google-chrome have an integral flash player and do not need a separate Adobe flash installation.

I do not like closed-source software because it tilts troubleshooting away from rational and toward voodoo. Also most of my clients are responsible for sensitive data, and Adobe software presents a prima facie case for insecurity and instability. Gnash works for a lot of .swf content.

However I like to listen to Internet radio using “www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/radio”, and this mandates particular flavours of Adobe flash player. So I use Google-chrome (i386 beta with third-party advert, jaavascript and cookies blocked) as the only closed-source software. Restricting this for Internet media -streaming acts as a containment measure and acceptable compromise.

It’s only integrated in the sense that Google includes it in the Chrome package. It’s still Adobe’s closed source.
