One day the gnome desktop is exactly the way I want with color and photo center and files, etc. on the desktop.
Then today I boot in and dead, no desktop.
when I click on desktop under ‘Places’ nothing happens.
I do not understand what has happened.
OpenSUSE 10.3 Gnome on Dell XPS M1330 w/4GB Ram 320GB HD.
I’m wondering why no answers yet?
This must be a simple thing.
What could I have done that would make the desktop totally blank and unresponsive?
right click and left click on desktop, nothing happens!
Bottom strip, in windows called ‘taskbar’ from left to right are…
Computer button that opens to ‘applications’ ‘documents’ and ‘places’. Also gives me ‘System’ with ability to Shutdown.
First button on right side shows power history for laptop battery.
Second button is openSUSE updater.
Third button is sound slider.
And the date with current time.
I would appreciate help in getting back my desktop.
I have even tried going through Yast and reselecting Gnome patterns and downloading.
Yet nothing happens to fix my dilemma.
I’m having a very similar problem. My desktop is missing and Nautilus won’t start, a window file browser pops up for a second and then nautilus closes when I try to browse files. My taskbar is running as well. You might try restarting nautilus but if your problem is like mine, there is nothing to restart. I’m still searching for an answer.
I had just installed NVidia for my laptop in 10.3 openSUSE.
The desktop was fine. I use Nautilas as well.
The fact no one is answering shows this must be one of two answers.
Everyone who knows their stuff, laughs when they hear this problem come up with newbies like me.
or
This is the most vile, evil desktop problem of all Linux time and many a good man/woman with deep Unix/Linux experience has fallen trying to kill this demon.
I may have to try installing KDE 4.1 or move to 11.1 in December.
Hope you find your answer. Please let me know if you happen to come across an answer.
Chetanji;)
I just created user: test password:test
everything opens up the same.
No desktop and clicking on places-desktop.
nothing happens.
Are we getting somewhere?
Chetanji
Thanks for your input!
I created a user as well and the problem is the same, no desktop. However root is fine. If I “su” to root under my user and launch nautilus, my desktop is then populated with the root desktop and nautilus is obviously running under root. Here’s a link to my previous post that has more detailed information if it helps.
Yes. I’ve sometimes installed from the online opensuse software search and kept a few repositories for software I wanted to keep updating. I’m assuming these are non standard.
open the gconf editor by pressing Alt-F2 and typing in “gconf-editor” without quotes. See if “/apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop” is set. If its not checked, tick the box and see what happens.
Also try clicking on the “desktop” folder to see if the icons that should be on the desktop are checked. Or the icons you want on the desktop…
I have my desktop set to not show icons by my choice but show desktop is checked. I think my problem is related to nautilus not even launching. However this may work for Chetanji. Just out of curiosity Chetanji, does nautilus work for you? Can you launch a file browser from either a nautilus icon or the command ‘nautilus’?
Yeah is does look like a lot in context. Almost embarrassing. Most are for less common software such as a wii controller program, xmgr, and such. I did install dropbox from one. It integrates into nautilus as I mentioned in another post:
Sorry, never used strace. Explicitly what to I type, “strace nautilus”? Doing that, the cli just continually outputs info but no window comes up. I end up having to kill it.
