GNOME 3 Favorites Dock Question

Hello All!!

At first, I was just signing up to ask a couple questions but after reading around, I’ve been seeing a lot and think I’m going to stick around awhile…anyway…

I just migrated over to GNOME 3 OpenSuSE from Fedora 15 and I’m loving it a lot more here than there. Fedora is on such a slippery slope downhill and it bums me out because that is where I’ve learned a lot, but that’s another story…

Anyway, I noticed that in Fedora 15, the favorites dock (the dock on the left side after going to the overview) only shows your favorites that you put there and open windows are merged with the favorites icon and only windows that are opened that are not in your favorites shows up…

This is tough to type so I’ll put some examples…

Ex. Fedora 15’s favorite dock includes Firefox and a Terminal…

I have 2 firefox windows open and libreoffice…in the favorites dock, their would be one icon of each as opposed to OpenSuSE that would have 3 firefox icons and 1 libreoffice…

I was wondering if their is a way to not show the open windows in the dock or merge open windows with their icons in the favorites…

I hope you guys can understand what I am trying to say…

Thank you in advance!!

Hi
I don’t see that effect here, I know what your saying, a screenshot says a thousand words though

I have the following extensions installed though;

i | gnome-shell-extension-alt-status-menu | GNOME Shell Extension -- Power Off Item in Status Menu
i | gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab | GNOME Shell Extension -- Classic Alt+Tab behavior
i | gnome-shell-extension-auto-move-windows | GNOME Shell Extension -- Assign specific workspaces to applications
i | gnome-shell-extension-drive-menu | GNOME Shell Extension -- Drive status menu
i | gnome-shell-extension-hotspot-icon-button | GNOME Shell Extension -- Displays the distributor logo icon
i | gnome-shell-extension-noa11y | GNOME Shell Extension -- Remove a11y from panel
i | gnome-shell-extension-places-menu | GNOME Shell Extension -- Places Status Indicator
i | gnome-shell-extension-user-theme | GNOME Shell Extension -- Support for Custom Themes
i | gnome-shell-extension-windows-navigator | GNOME Shell Extension -- Keyboard Selection of Windows and Workspaces

see on the left how their is my favorite’d firefox icon and then on the bottom, their is two firefox icons for the open windows…

also, my gnome3 looks nothing like yours =( i like your look hahaha

i’m going to look for some extensions/tweaks/whatever they’re called and some themes though here in a bit once i get stuff in order and decide if i’m staying with suse or going to attempt an arch install

Hi
You can read up on them here…
https://live.gnome.org/GnomeShell/Extensions

I think the gnome-shell-extension-alternate-tab changes to what your wanting.

Also, it seems like EVERYTHING starts VERY slowly in OpenSuSE compared to Fedora 15…

I’ve never installed a distro without a GUI installer…I think I am going to attempt an Arch install though, but if you could assist me, I’d appreciate it because I would like to try and get SuSE working because I’ve always like SuSE and hate jumping distro to distro and setting everything back up lolol

I just installed Gnome 3 (btw, thank you for your assistance Malcolm!), and I have to say, my machine starts very VERY quickly!! Love openSUSE and Gnome 3!!

Thanks for the heads up on the extensions… think ketherial has some I want also for banshee, etc…

Hi
Works fine here and my netbook, what hardware do you have graphics, RAM etc?

Malcolm, how did you get the Gnome logo in the Activities Corner? Is it a particular theme or something?

Hi
That’s my gnome-shell-extension-hotspot-icon-button;
software.opensuse.org: Search Results

It works and have submitted, but need to do some more work on it for it to be accepted

Thank you for the reply! I am going to get it!!

btw, I appreciate all the work you have been doing for Gnome 3. I have seen several of your contributions. Thanks again!

I have an Asus K60IJ, 500GB HD, 4GB RAM

I’ve never had issues with OpenSuSE and it boots fine…I have noticed it is slow when starting applications…such as the terminal or firefox, it will take a few minutes and then before I know it, I have 6 windows open because I thought I never clicked it lolol

But anyway, back to the OP…

I don’t think the Alt-Tab extension would be it because all that does is change the Alt+Tab combination to switch between open windows rather than individual applications like it is now…

But, I guess it is kind of what I’m looking for, except in the Favorites Dock…

Like I said, in the screenshot, their are 3 firefox icons because their are 3 open firefox windows…

In F15, their would be 1 firefox icon and I could left-click and go to the open window or right-click and choose between the open windows or open a new window…

Maybe it was a Fedora only tweak??

If I add the dock on the right-hand side that shows open windows, does the favorites dock on the left side show open windows?? I’ll deal with the extra dock if that is what will fix it (or maybe I can add the right dock and then hide it??)

I don’t know, it just sucks when I am doing intensive work and have a ton of windows open and the favorite dock icons are super small and their are 30 of them lolol

Anyway, again, thanks for all the help and all the future help…it is all very appreciated…

Does anybody else have any other suggestions?

Hi
Gnome-tweak-tool, the other one is maybe user-themes (again a shell extension) I have a ASUS netbook (2GB RAM) and have multiple windows open and see no slow downs?

Maybe open a terminal and run top to see what’s cooking, is it using swap (run free command)?

well, i failed miserably at installing arch on my laptop (i was attempting it in virtualbox first to make sure i could even do it…i swear i am the only person that can follow instructions step by step and it wouldn’t work…)

I think what I might try and do is use SuSE Studio and create my own iso with gnome 3 and just the bare minimum…

any links to tutorials or anything like that on how to get a suse studio distro w/ gnome 3?? (do i need to clone fcrozat’s gnome3 live cd?)

i have a feeling i’m giong to get stuck going back to F15 :\

Edit: Also, what is Gnome reloaded?

umm…the craziest thing just happened…

the dock problem fixed itself and it isn’t creating tons of icons and it isn’t being so slow and laggy…

i’m going to run it and set it up how i like it for a little and hope it doesn’t **** the bed again

i appreciate all the help…have any links for extensions and themes?

i have the link to the gnome 3 site with the exensions, just wasn’t sure if their were any other sites that had any extensions
