Gimp Won't Open!

That’s basically all I know. I run a KDE desktop and have not recently upgraded. However, for some odd reason, Gimp just won’t come up. I see the bouncy Gimp icon next to my cursor and I see a task manager icon at the bottom of my screen but after about 15 seconds, the icon leaves and nothing ever happens. I am a web designer and Gimp is a must have! I’m sorry I don’t really have any more details for you - that’s all I know. Is there something that I could look for that may be messing up Gimp? Thanks in advance

If you start it from the command line what errors do you get?

I’m not sure. Can you tell me how to start a program from the command line? I’m still new to the Linux environment

So sometimes when you run a program from the terminal mode, you can get some extra error messages. First off, you need to know the actual name of the program, which at least in my case is not just gimp, but rather gimp-2.6 to be exact. To find out this information, right click your menu icon and select Menu Editor. On mine if I open Graphics / Image Editing / Gimp on the left then on the right I see that the Command is gimp-2.6 %U, but we don’t need to use the %U for what we are trying to do. Once I know the program name, I just do a File / Quit or press the Window “X” of the Menu Editor to close it out.

Next lets go Menu / System / Terminal / Konsole and open a terminal session Window. Now at the terminal prompt, enter the Gimp name you found, again in my case that would be gimp-2.6. Now in my case the program starts just fine and I get no error messages. I am running openSUSE 11.3 64 bit and KDE version 4.5, which is not required to get Gimp to work, but the reason mine might be newer than yours. If you get any error messages in Terminal, we want you copy and paste them here in a new message. If the information is large, highlight the entire block and then press the Code (#) which makes such data easier to handle here.

Thank You,

Ok, I did what you said and found that my Gimp is gimp-2.6 as well. I typed that into the terminal and found this error:

gimp-2.6: symbol lookup error: gimp-2.6: undefined symbol: gimp_micro_version

Thanks for your help

Odd error for a program that was working. Maybe a bit of corruption…

Try going to Yast search for Gimp right click and select refresh.
press accept
this will reinstall the package.

Also are you using any special plugins?

I could not find a refresh button but I clicked upgrade. Nothing changed though. No, I am not using any odd plugins that would affect Gimp. The only thing I can think of is some plugins I recently installed from PackMan that allowed me to play aac audio files on my player. I don’t see how that would affect Gimp but it might have been that after I installed these plugins that Gimp wouldn’t work. Pretty odd…

Run this on a terminal:

rpm -qa | grep -i gimp

This will list the gimp related rpms that you have installed. On my 11.2 system I get:

inkscape-extensions-gimp-0.46-69.1.x86_64
gimp-2.6.8-1.1.1.x86_64
gimp-help-2.4.2-3.2.noarch
gimp-lang-2.6.8-1.1.1.noarch
libgimpprint-4.2.7-6.3.1.x86_64
gimp-help-browser-2.6.8-1.1.1.x86_64
gimp-branding-openSUSE-11.2-2.1.noarch
gimp-plugins-python-2.6.8-1.1.1.x86_64

Let’s see what you have. You could also run this:

rpm -q -a --queryformat "%{INSTALLTIME}	%{INSTALLTIME:day} \
%{BUILDTIME:day} %-30{NAME}	%15{VERSION}-%-7{RELEASE}	%{arch} \
%25{VENDOR}%25{PACKAGER}
" | sort | cut --fields="2-" | less -S

It will list all you have installed sorted by installation date. At the bottom you will see the
latest things.

Paste that part here.

If you right click grump in the Yast-software Management screen it does not give the refresh option???
What version of OpenSuse?

@gogalthorp, I don’t see a “grump” to right click on! My version is the latest, I believe. OpenSUSE 11.3.

@Carlos E. R., I did what you said and got this result for the first line of code:

libgimpprint-4.2.7-15.1.1.i586
gimp-branding-upstream-2.6.8-6.1.i586
gimp-2.6.8-6.1.i586

For the second line of code you gave me, I got hundreds of lines but I only copied this much:

Yes, the last line is Gimp and it is correct because before posting this I uninstalled and reinstalled Gimp to see if that would help. Of course, it really didn’t.

It’s a typo, he meant “gimp”, of course.

Compared with mine, there are a few rpms missing. I would try that first. Who knows.

I was only interested in the last few.

I see you have a lot of things installed from packman. Is that intentional?
Most are video related, so those are correct. But I have doubts about some.

I see you have recent updates related to glib. Did you reboot? Run “zypper ps” to see if it is
necessary.

I leave the entries about which I have doubts. Maybe they are correct, but… we have to suspect
anything.

that depends on whether or not you have the correct set of repos
enabled…have you done any one-button installs?

i think we need to see, from a terminal:

zypper lr -d

and, if you have a VLC repo enabled, jump in your time machine and go
back to the day you used it and disable it immediately after doing the
download you intended…

CAVEAT: http://is.gd/bpoMD [posted via NNTP w/openSUSE 10.3]

@Carlos E. R., Even when right clicking on Gimp in YaST, I still get no refresh button. Yes, I have rebooted after installing the updates for glib. I installed all the rpms that you had that I didn’t. I also, uninstalled two of the entries that you had doubts about. The two were k3b-lang and gimp-branding-upstream. The rest I had to leave because they were installed intentionally and I need them.

@DenverD, I’m not sure if I have or not. I’m not really sure I understand what a one button install is. I don’t think I’ve ever done it though… I used the terminal with the code you gave and got the following result:

I don’t know what a VLC repo is, how do I know if one enabled?

This is the result of rpm -qa | grep gimp on my 11.3 system:

gimp-help-2.4.2-6.1.noarch
gimp-module-hal-2.6.8-6.1.x86_64
libgimpprint-4.2.7-15.1.1.x86_64

gimp-help-browser-2.6.8-6.1.x86_64
gimp-2.6.8-6.1.x86_64

Like Carlos E.R., I have several more packages than you do. I would consider installing these additional packages to see if that solves your problem.

I would disable 4 and 6. Then do

zypper dup

The only package that you had that Carlos didn’t was gimp-module-hal. I went ahead and installed that as well. But Gimp still won’t load :frowning:

And what is 4 and 6?

From the list of repos that you posted, you need to disable repo 4 and 6. You can do it in YaST, or from the terminal, you can type:

zypper mr -d 4

Ok, I did what you said for both 4 and 6 but nothing changed. Gimp still won’t load…

Ok, now run zypper dup from the terminal.
