I have firefox 3 and gimp 2.6. For some reason Gimp was assigned as the default program for opening PDF files from firefox and I cannot seem to change it or remove it from the list of programs entirely.
What happens is that I want to normally be asked what I want to do with a PDF file so I can either open it in my default PDF reader (okular) or save it to disk. If I do end up saving it I tend to right-click on the file in the download window and click “open”, which used to open it in the default, and only, PDF reader, which is okular. This is even more of an issue in my citation manager plugin, zotero, which will automatically open any PDF in the default program without giving you any option to select a program.
However, after a recent update the default program has been set to Gimp 2.6. There is no situation under which I would want to open a PDF in Gimp directly from firefox. If I go to the firefox preferences and select the “applications” tab, under PDF there are two programs listed: "Gnu Image Manipulation"and “okular”. However, if I go to “application details” there is only okular. Gimp is not on the list so I cannot remove it. If I change the setting from “always ask” to “okular” it makes no difference, PDF files are still launched in gimp. I changed my default PDF reader in gnome to Okular (I use KDE, but still have the gnome configuration programs), but this made no difference. I went so far as to search all the files in my firefox profile directory for any mention of “gimp” or “manipulation” but neither turned up anything useful. It is making it extremely hard to work with PDF’s since Gimp is simply not a PDF reader, it keeps asking me to convert the PDF into raster images so it can edit them. Is there some way to change the default PDF reader in firefox or to remove Gimp from the list of programs firefox uses to open PDF files? Either would be fine.
That didn’t fix it, either in dolphin or nautilus. It works fine when opening the program in both dolphin and nautilus, it is only firefox that is having a problem.
Is this a user-based install of Firefox or the one that came with your
system? There are some applications I cannot ‘Remove’ as a regular user
and I’m guessing it is because those associations are defined in the
system as part of Firefox and, while I can add to that list, my
nobody-user doesn’t have rights to manipulate everything system-wide.
With this in mind try running gnomesu firefox and see if you can
remove the option once in there for the bad option (GNU Image
Manipulation). If this works close the new root-owned Firefox window
and try your own user again after restarting any copies you had open.
Good luck.

I really don’t think I should have to install a new piece of software just so I am not forced to use a totally unsuitable program for one specific file format. There has to be a better way. Unless Gimp is specifically hard-coded into firefox, which makes no sense whatsoever and should be fixed, then there must be some way to change it somewhere.
I ended up giving up and uninstalling Gimp entirely. Now it opens in krita. Everything is the same. Why is firefox so obsessed with opening PDF’s in image editors instead of PDF viewers?
this is really irritating! in firefox i set the preference for opening pdf to /usr/bin/okular but guess what… still in gimp! And becase of all the brushes installed opening gimp takes long.
I use kde/debian, so this may be totally irrelevant for you, but:
I had a similar problem, firefox (iceweasel) opened pdf-files in KPDF rather than okular. I found a file “.mime.types” in my home directory. Adding the line:
Hello, for me this issue has recently arrived through upgrading to opensuse 11.1. I have been unable to find a setting to stop GIMP opening in Firefox or Configure Desktop. Has anyone on the Forum had any advance in dealing with it? Thanks, Stuart
I just upgraded to SUSE 11.1 also and had the same problem with firefox. I went into Firefox’s Edit: Preferences: Applications and selected the PDF document action to “Use other” I then selected Okular in the usr/bin directory. I then changed it back to “Always ask” so that I can choose which program to load with the pdf.
Thanks for these suggestions. Files open fine (with Okular) from the desktop and dolphin. My particular issue is Zotero within Firefox. Unfortunately, setting “always ask” in Firefox doesn’t stop the default GIMP opening immediately when a PDF file is double-clicked within Zotero. A rather inconvenient workaround in Zotero is to open the container directory and then the PDF file. However, this is exacerbated by incorrect referencing to the container directory. It only commenced with 11.1 but it is hard to say whether this is a Suse or Zotero thing. We will just have to wait to see how this works out in Suse, Firefox and Zotero. Again, thanks for the suggestions, Stuart
problem exists in Opera 9.63 too. And the weird thing is, it’s not starting GIMP all the time for pdf’s, sometimes it takes okular, as it should (and did before). Behaviour shows on same sites/pdf’s in FF and Opera
