Hello,
I’ve been using Suse 10.3 for about 3 weeks now (migrating from WindXP) and I have a couple of general questions about it.
a) does it have something like defragmenting or is that just a Windows thing?
b) Are viruses, spy-, mal- and adware really no problem or will I need a scanner prog? If yes, which is best?
Thanks
g
Welcome to openSUSE.
Generally speaking defragmentation of a Linux hard drive is significantly less than that of a Windows hard drive, so most users don’t bother.
Currently Linux is not distributed wide enough to garner lots of attention from malevolent virus writing hackers. You do need to exercise caution wrt security with Linux, but not by anti-virus nor by anti-adware sofware. Instead you need to follow standard policy with separation of root and regular user permissions, and maintain your firewall. As long as you maintain the root/regular user division, and operate nominally as a regular user, its very difficult for a virus (even if there were some very active Linux virus, which there aren’t) to propogate beyond the “user space”.
Please, next time when you make a post on our forum, can you make your Subject more descriptive. ie. Title: Noob question about Linux virus & defragmentation.
Thankyou for participating in our forum, … and please enjoy your openSUSE.
Thanks for your quick reply.
Will do next time!
