GDM fails to load

As of today I am unable to load the GUI in opensuse 11.1. When booting I get the normal opensuse loading screen but about half way through the screen goes black.

If I hit alt-f1 I can see the start up info.

The problems looks like when it tries to load gdm.

It shows a couple of Warnings saying "GdmDisplay: display lasted .8135… seconds.

The findal warning says “GdmLocalDisplayFactory: maximum number of X display failures reached: check X server log for errors.”

I did do a couple of updates yesterday before shutting down but am not sure what they were.

Any ideas on how to fix this.

Thanks,
Joe

Hi
If your running the ati or nvidia driver you probably need to re-run
the install routine after some X11 updates.

Same here with KDM from KDE4.3rc2. So I don’t know excactly whether its caused by KDE or my Xorg. I use the xorg-repo from buildservice.

Nope, just using the nv drivers. I was never able to get things working using the nvidia driver.

I am not sure what I am using. I don’t recall ever adding a special repo for Xorg…

Hi
Well If you use the console login then try;

su -
init 3
sax2 -r -m 0=nv
init 5 && exit

If you want instructions for the nvidia driver as search of the forum
and doing it the ‘hard way’ (which is actually fairly easy) I’ve posted
they way i do it many times lol

Ended up getting it working again by deleting Xorg and gdm and reinstalling both. Things seem to be working fine now.

I may give the the nvidia drivers another try. I think there have been several updates to it since the last time I tried.

Thanks for the help.

My problem is that I cannot resume from hibernation sometimes (and only sometimes. I have tried to run “gdm” and “gnome” from su, but those haven’t worked. I will try “startx” next.).

I used “cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE” and I get "
(WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown.
16.737] (II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER

."

I checked into those last ones, and I get from the uncat’d version: "

," and I’m wondering why my display cares about my peripheral devices. Anyone care to let me know? Do you think reinstalling as Puzzled Penguin has done will prevent this curiosity from happening?

The pertinent specifications (I am new to Linux, but I consider myself somewhat computer-literate):
Studio 15 Laptop {I keep seeing Studio 1551, if that matters}
Intel Core i5-430M 2.26GHz (2.53GHz Turbo Mode, 3M cache)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470, 1GB
15.6Inch Full High Definition (1080p) High Brightness LED Display with TrueLife and Camera
It’s a 64 bit laptop too.

What are the symptoms when it doesn’t work?

I suggest that you edit /etc/suspend.conf, the line:

#splash = y

change to:

splash = n

To see at what message it stops. You don’t mention what openSUSE version you run. Then you can also
suspend via command line in text mode, it is sometimes safer.

The same error occured in a vm and it got resolved by installing the vmwaretools.

Restarting the xdm service too did not work. For vmware env its best to start with tools installation
to get the drivers right
