Game controllers how to find which are supported?

Introduction. I want to play Robotron 2084 through MAME,
The original arcade machine has two joy sticks.
One for the direction you walk, one for the direction you shoot.

I have already asked for help on a computer forum, but still need help on the Linux part , and specific what controllers I can hook up.

I have of-course already googled, and what I did find. There is support in the Linux kernel for the xbox 360 controlers.
I also found this:

https://software.opensuse.org/package/xboxdrv?

Problem is I don’t want an xbox controller, if I get a controller I want the sony one, because it has 2 joysticks.

But how do I know it it will work?

https://www.addictivetips.com/ubuntu-linux-tips/usb-gaming-controllers/

Does anybody know ?

Because the first link also list the steam controller, I wonder if it will work outside steam too. With mame.

Another solution for me would be to use two Atari ST joysticks I still have and this:

I am a bit worried though on wasting money for something not working on Linux.

ps4 controller seems to be supported but I cant find anything on a ps2 controller.

Anybody here using a game controller ?

Hi
I use a xbox360 wireless controller, minecraft mainly (plus pushed the last two updates/fixes). I don’t have steam running.

Not sure I want a wireless, but that at least confirms a 360 controller will work.

Could probably use the d pad and the joystick.

But the xbox 360 controller has 2 joysticks. They are just placed differently than in the sony controller.

I just googled for a picture, and your totally right.

So a xbox 360 controller might be the safest solution.

One question though, will a wireless controller work if your pc is below a desk / table ? When there is no direct line of sight ?

Hi
Yup, you can always move the wireless unit, mine has a USB cord about 2/3ft long…

Thank you.

I think I will order this one, its a wired one. It even states its for the Xbox and pc.

Googled to make sure the xbox one controller is supporter with Linux.

https://www.howtogeek.com/225518/HOW-TO-USE-AN-XBOX-ONE-CONTROLLER-ON-WINDOWS-OS-X-AND-LINUX/

Linux Drivers Surprisingly, other than Windows 10, Linux is the only OS in the list to include native support for the Xbox One Controller. If your distro is running any kernel version past 3.17, you are good to go. SteamOS also has support for the controller.

I’m using an xBox One controller an I’m really hapy with it. I just like the vibration in the different buttons a lot.

Sounds good.

My Xbox one controller is in, can’t wait to try it, but as another topic of mine shows, I am having a problem to get mame working.
I might test it tomorrow though with F1 2017. Once tried that game with a keyboard, and that was no fun.

If I get bored one day, I might try if I can get my momo steering wheel working on Linux for racing games.
There are rumours it can be done.

Been thinking about it, but also to just use windows 10 for that. The reason my pc is dual boot is games in the first place.
And that list is getting shorter and shorter thanks to Linux and Valve.

Been on openSUSE for years now, and I do remember the shock that went through some of the Linux world.
Wait what now ? People want to game on Linux?

These days we have support for Xbox controllers.

I just played Robotron 2084 in mame with my xbox one controller.

Will take allot of getting used too, and maybe I need to change the joysticks, swap which one is for move and which one is for shooting.

Either I just suck at it after many years, or there is some muscle memory left, because I keep using the move joystick for the direction I want to shoot.

So instead of shooting the robot, I walk into it. rotfl!

Also will test if using the d pad i maybe easier.

Btw, how many drivers did I install to use this controller? Zero.

Not sure about this game actually. If you are going to use an emulator to play this game then you only need to configure the controller for that particular emulator.

I tested the ps4 controller and it works great!

do you use it with the Xbox One wireless dongle?

i know they can be connected by BT, but only one of them, and I need to get two Xbox wireless controllers connected to TW.
