Fonts

Hi does anyone know how to change all my fonts to Tahoma? I saw it displayed on a website I visited and it was the one that gives me the least physical headaches.

I don’t have it as a font that I can find in my browser controls or in open office, so I need to get it from somewhere, but how do I make it the overriding font for everything, eg, YasT, browsers, word processor, messenger etc.?

Thank you.

Maybe it depends on what DE are you using. What are you using kde, gnome or xfce. Please post it and maybe someone who is using same as yours will give you an advise. I am using xfce and using tahoma also.

I don’t know what that means but I have OpenSUSE 11.1 and I have all the recommended upgrades, such as YasT2 and the browsers I have are Seamonkey, Konqueror and Firefox.

his “Maybe it depends on what DE are you using.” means: are you using
KDE3, KDE4, Xfce, or which of many other “display environments”…

from your answer above i see Konqueror which probably (but not
assuredly) means you use KDE, but which version is still not known…

try this: open Konqueror, click Help > About KDE and read across the
top of the new pop-upped window…mine says:

K Desktop Environment. Release 3.5.7 “release 72.11”

but, actually i don’t know why the other poster asked for that info as
Tahoma is a microsoft font, and installing those can be kinda tricky
but not impossible on any DE and most any flavor of Linux (if you
have access to the fonts, maybe from an old, you-paid-for-it-M$
install, somewhere)

put this search string in a google search:
site:forums.opensuse.org “microsoft fonts”
and, i’m sure you can find the way to copy them over…

but FIRST, i suggest you use YaST Software Management to install
“dejavu” which is a free font package where you will probably find
something you like just as well…

K Desktop Environment
Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) “release 4.10.4”

is what I have.

Ok I will install dejavu.

Also, if Tahoma is unavailable, I just want a font that isn’t blocky and such and would much rather prefer something cursivish without being hard to read, and more rounded, if you understand what I mean?

Like Tahoma seems fine, as does Comic Sans MS, however I assume they are both Microsoft fonts.

yep, take a look at what dejavu offers…if not happy with them there
are ways to get exactly what you want on your box…i’m just not sure
all the ways are legal (if you care about that)…to me, it seems like
if you ever bought the M$ font package you should be able to use
them anywhere, and everywhere you want…but, some smart M$ attorney
probably wrote different, somewhere…

A font available in KDE that might interest you is Nimbus Sans L.
I got the idea after seeing what Tahoma looked like.

On the page I link to in this post, down the bottom right hand side, above ‘Hot Links’ there is a ‘Go To’ section that has dates. The selections are ‘Year’, ‘Month’, ‘Day’ and the button to click says ‘View’.

If anyone knows what the font that is used to display the numbers from the drop down menus and the font used in the text on the button (View), I would be most appreciative.

That font seems to be the least likely to cause physical headaches.

You may not want to click the link, however:

China Military Online English Edition

Thanks for the idea, it is a good font, however I do a lot of reading and I need a font that isn’t going to give me really bad headaches, the shapes and symbols of certain fonts really cause me headaches.

Programming and Linux: Install MS fonts in openSUSE 11.1

you can get Tahoma from here Tahoma Font Download , it’s not in the repo packages

I ask what DE the op is using because correct me if I’m wrong each one has it’s own way of installing/setting the fonts. If one knew exactly what he is using then he can point exactly to the op where to set his fonts.

> I ask what DE the op is using because

could be…i actually have no idea (added my M$ fonts to 10.3 so long
ago i don’t remember)…sorry if you thought my comment on your
posting was to poke you in the eye…i guess i should have said
(instead of what i did):

but actually, it has been so long since i added the MS fonts that i
don’t remember why the other poster asked which DE you used . . .
