External dvd drive difficult to mount

Ever since I got an external dvd drive I’ve had troubles mounting it. External hard drives don’t have any problems.

When I plug in the dvd drive via usb, nothing happens, except for a chime. Nothing is mounted and nothing shows up in Dolphin. If I open the drive and close it again, Dolphin will show audio cd in the side panel but clicking on that just copies all of the audio files into a cache. If I close Dolphin and then reopen, sometimes the drive will mount just like an external storage drive and then everything works normally.

Anyone know why I’m having this problem or if there is a way I can mount the drive manually without jumping through all of these hoops to get Plasma to do it?

@pilotgi:

What happens if, you click on the “Device Notifier” icon in the KDE Plasma System Tray and, select “Mount only” before attempting to access the DVD drive.

  • Even with DVD drives connected to the system’s internal buses, a DVD may well take some minutes to mount in User Space before it can be accessed.

I don’t see “Device Notifier” anywhere. If you’re talking about the up arrow in the bottom panel, I only have “Disks and Devices.”

@pilotgi:

I mean this symbol – assuming a default “Breeze” theme, it’s a Thumb-Drive icon –

And then, I mean this, when you click on the device icon –

  • I clicked on the “down arrow” to the right of the “Mount and Open” text.

The KDE documentation refers to a “Device Notifier” … :smiling_imp:

If that thumb drive icon showed up when I plugged in the dvd plalyer, then I wouldn’t be having any problems. Dvd’s work pretty well but my problem is with audio cds. The last audio cd I tried, the drive mounted normally after I opened and closed the tray.

Anyway, thanks for your responses.

Maybe a hardware issue –

  • Are you certain that, your system has all the relevant up to date Firmware packages installed?
