Exotic install: Lilo on Microsoft Dynamic Discs(sata), x64

Hi,

I have the following config, 2 hard drives on SATA ports, software raid on dynamic discs for windows, something like:

/dev/sda1  32G - ntfs partition
/dev/sda2  ntfs raid

/dev/sdb1  32G - openSuse 11.1 x64 ext3 partition for /
/dev/sdb2  ntfs raid

I try to install lilo on /dev/sdb and choose to boot linux from BIOS boot menu as most posts state that lilo can handle LDM partitions.

But when executing lilo I get the “Trying to map files from unnamed device 0x000e (NFS/RAID mirror down?)” message.

I also tried using root=/dev/disk/by-id/ata-… instead /dev/sdb1 but without any luck. I have opted for openSUSE as it’s kernel is supposed to support partitions on dynamic discs right away…

My lilo.conf looks like:

boot=/dev/sdb
timeout=5
default=linux
image=/boot/vmlinuz
	label=linux
	initrd=/boot/initrd
	read-only
	root=/dev/sdb1
other=/dev/sda1
	label=win

Any ideas would be greatly apreciated.

Umm, is there a reason you are using lilo and not the native grub?

Does grub not work with dynamic disks?

You’re right. Grub does not work with dynamic disks, but LILO does.

Maybe are there other boot managers also supporting dynamic disks?
