Evolution / Thunderbird don't recognize my passwords

Have been using Evolution for mail handling for quite some time.
For some reason, it stopped recognizing the password which is valid.
Going to the mail server via browser, the credentials work just fine.

I’m not that particular and thinking maybe an issue with Evolution so I installed Thunderbird and got the same result.
When I go through the initial setup in Thunderbird, it tells me the settings were found by probing the given server. All of the settings for POP3 are what I have logged as having used for Evolution and seem correct… except that after entering the password, it says it is unable to log in at server. Possibly wrong config, wrong username or wrong password.

I’m baffled. Via the browser that very same password allows me to login to the mail server. I’ve never had so much trouble setting up mail with either Evolution or Thunderbird.
Hoping for a push or a prompt for info needed to help define a resolution.
THANKS!

Are you using 2FA?

not that I am aware of.

A lot of public mail servers no more allow using the same credentials for IMAP/POP/SMTP. Have you tried to ask your mail server support?

Did you check their guidance for thunderbird:

Thanks!
I did send mail to support@zoho.com last week.
No response from them. Not comforting.

I’d step back for a moment and think about this.

Has your Evolution | Thunderbolt been updated recently? Unsure? Then check in YaST.

Do you use the E | T apps published/ packaged by openSUSE? Or from a Flatpak? Or from Mozilla?

Here is what I would do:

Create a brand new user account on your system.

Log out of your usual user account (and any others logged in)

Now log into the new user account just created.

Now, launch Evolution and setup the email account and attempt to access.

Success?? If yes, I’d say there’s some sort of Evolution cached data corruption with your “real” user account.

If still having an issue, might contact Zoho, or post in their forum.

This seems a good path to try.
Both E / T apps are fresh and from openSUSE repos as we normally would.
I’ll try a “new user” and see how that goes and reply.

ok I created a new user and logged off, then back on as the new user.
Opened Thunderbird … and I assumed that I would still use the same “mail account” info as for my normal username.
Defined the fields for the zoho mail account and … same results.

Possibly wrong config, wrong username or wrong password.

Perhaps I misunderstood?

As suggested in the thread by sao_bento I accessed the Zoho mail instructions. Which are really what I have done.

All details entered and it appears to have accepted them… until I press either Done or Retest. Then the error panel returns.

I was asked in the thread above if I had 2fa for the mail account. And I do not THINK I do. Since I’m on a desktop box, I don’t have fingerprint or camera options.
And when I use the web interface, it only asks the password like I always have done.
I have noted that IF 2fa is involved they say it needs an Application Specific Password.
Perhaps I should do that in any case?

Additional detail is from a “chat” session with Zoho AI.
I’ve never heard of an .mx record.

Zia Mail AI - Ensure the correct MX records are set for your domain in your DNS settings as per Zoho’s configuration guidelines.

  • Remove conflicting MX records from previous email providers to avoid delivery issues.

  • Verify the email client settings (IMAP/POP and SMTP) with recommended Zoho Mail server names and ports for Thunderbird and Evolution clients.

  • MX records are DNS server entries that specify the mail servers responsible for receiving emails on behalf of your domain.

  • To configure MX records for Zoho Mail, verify your domain first, then add these records in your DNS settings:

  • “mx.zoho.com” with priority 10

  • “mx2.zoho.com” with priority 20

  • “mx3.zoho.com” with priority 50

  • Ensure no conflicting MX records exist for successful email delivery.

I read that but, it makes no sense to me. I tried to grasp it but it sounds like something used on a Zoho Business account.
https://www.zoho.com/mail/help/adminconsole/configure-email-delivery.html

As far as I can see on the webinterface for zoho mail I don’t have a “zoho mail admin console”.

Thanks to all trying to sort me out. My 70year old brain is beginning to reel.

OK all THANKS to you all. I did just get an email from support@zoho.com.
I do not KNOW how I enabled 2FA but, as the very first responder arvidjaar suggested…
That is what has happened I guess. Looks like Zoho did have to do something behind the scenes as well.
I’m guessing that in the course of trying to add Zoho mail on my iPhone, that happened.
If you can even believe it, this is my first “cell phone”. Haven’t had it long so that’s a new challenge as well for me. Obviously.
I wish I could buy you all lunch.
Thank you! thank you one and all.

We have made the necessary changes for your Zoho mail account at the backend and you should now be able to configure your Zoho Mail account as POP in the external mail application.

In addition to that, upon checking we could see that you have enabled 2FA(Two Factor Authentication) for your Zoho Mail account. In that case, to configure your Zoho mail account in an external client as IMAP/POP, the “Application specific password” has to be used instead of your Zoho mail account password.

To generate the Application specific password, please refer to the link below.

Once the Application password is generated, kindly use that password to login to your Zoho mail account in the external mail client and see if it resolves the issue.
