Embedded video in web pages

Is there a way to set embedded videos not to buffer when you hit a web
page with them? For instance, I go to
http://www.sharmusic.com/shartv.asp in Firefox and all the video clips
start downloading.

Initially I was unable to see the videos although I could see embedded
videos on other sites like youtube or cnn, but those are flash, not
quicktime, IIRC.

I installed mplayer-plugin, and am now able to stream the videos, but I
don’t want to automatically pull them all down. I just want to pull
down the one(s) I click on. They all come down in mass however.

Is this configurable on the client side?

Running SUSE 10.3.

seems to work here, you can give a try to add-on Stop “Autoplay 0.7.3”

Disable the autoplay of the embedded music and movie. The users have 2 modes to
choose:

  1. Disable only the autostart of the embedded media. The users can press the
play button of the controller to play it.

  2. Block the media when loading a page. It will be replaced by a red frame.
Press the red frame to load and then play it.

This extension can also convert the ie-only tag “bgsound” to “embed”, and it can
also block Flash media by a costumizable blacklist.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1765

but, if you like the way some web sites auto-play music…it is gonna block that
too…

btw, GREAT site, thanks for the pointer: http://www.sharmusic.com/shartv.asp

I too want to say thanks for the link “the james Bond theme” done on a piano & violin. It’s different & beautiful.

If they are flash clips, maybe the Flashblock add-on will do the job for you. I dislike pages that autoplay.

Nope, quicktime. Flash seems to work correctly - I go to a site w/Flash
and they just sit there until I click on them.

I tried it on my wife’s XP, and it does the same thing there - they all
start downloading at once. I emailed sharmusic.com and mentioned it to
them. Maybe they can tweak it on their side. I’m sure I’m not the only
one that would prefer not to mirror their site on my hard drive! <g>

I added Stop Autoplay but it didn’t seem to affect it on the Shar site.
Nice add-on though - there’s plenty of sites that drive me nuts when
they start playing music in the background.

So when you go there it doesn’t load all the videos at once? Do you
have the mplayerplug-in loaded or are you using something else to view
the clips?

Without mplayer-plugin, Firefox prompts me to install a plugin (but
fails to find any on it’s own.) Loading mplayerplug-in allows the
videos to play, but w/the undesired behavior.

Yup - replied to it. Should be there now. Long story short, it didn’t
work.

when i go there nothing happens until i click…and, then the mplayer-plugin
springs into action and i hear music…

wait…i have a faint memory of there being a setup or add on that allows one
to PRE-load or pre-cache links on a page…so that when (if?) you click on them
they start immediately…

do you have that installed/enabled/setup???
what add-ons do you have?

I’ve heard of such a beast but never have wanted that functionality.
Maybe if I had a lot faster connection that would be OK.

The plugins I have are:
Adblock plus 0.7.5.5,
DownloadHelper 3.2,
Google toolbar 3.1.20080605L,
and now Stop Autoplay 0.7.3.

Setup/config is pretty stock. Firefox 3.0, no prefretch settings that I
can find, no proxy, all very plain Jane.

I looked through the Download Helper settings but didn’t find anything
that looked like it would be causing the behavior. Just to be sure
though I’ll disable that and give it at test & report my findings…

do that, because my quick look at
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
where i found:

“When you are on a page containing links to images or movies, you can download
some or all of them at once.”

which sure sounds to me like if you turned that feature OFF, your unhappiness with

“am now able to stream the videos, but I don’t want to automatically pull them
all down. I just want to pull down the one(s) I click on. They all come down
in mass however”

would be history!!

I disabled DH, to no avail. Still seeing the same behavior in both
Firefox and Opera. I looked through /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf and
~/.mplayer/* but nothing jumped out at me. Searched for auto and
download. Nothing apparent in the config files. So I’m stumped…

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446 this seems to solve it.
