“The best” ™ - I don’t know. But I guess that mplayer / mencoder can do the job. It’s available from the packman repo.

Hiya,
There’s a program called dvd2xvid that’ll do the trick (really a front end
for either transcode or mencoder AFAIK. You could also try Handbrake which
was just added to the packman repo last Monday. Or transcode directly if
you prefer command line programs (type man transcode from the command line
for–many–options. ‘sudo zypper install transcode’ if you get a message
that it’s not installed.)

i’ve installed the rpm for HandBrake. it works great so far. thanks for your help.
I use dvdrip mostly.
I write three console interfaces to MEncoder, xvidenc, h264enc and divxenc. So if someone wants, he can try them. Available from my repo in my sig. I also package ripdvd and undvd (both not mine) which focus mostly on newcomers to encoding, eg they don’t offer much but require considerable less configuration and knowledge of things
