Does anyone know if there is any program in the repos that would let me rip my home made DVD’s into an avi or mp4 file?
Thanks.

You can do this:
mplayer dvd://1 -dumpstream -dumpfile movie.mpg
(obviously you need mplayer installed)
Or UI app like: Handbrake, k9copy, OGMRip… and more in Packman
Hi,
If you’re using KDE, K3b can do the trick easily. Install k3b-codecs and transcode, then open K3b and select Tools>Rip Video DVD. A dialog box will open and from here you can select the rip location and the file format.
Take Care,
Ian
That’s quite a choice any one in particular good? I want a GUI program.
No, sorry I hate KDE, on Gnome instead. However I like some KDE apps, like Amarok and K3B etc. So they are installed on my Gnome setup.
Right, was going to suggest installing them if you’re using gnome. K3b makes it pretty easy to rip from DVD. I just had to do this yesterday for a friend who wanted to get his daughter’s dance recital onto his computer. It didn’t have any protection on the dvd so it was as easy as the instructions I posted above. Just make sure to download k3b-codecs and transcode and k3b should be able to rip the dvd.
Take Care,
Ian
Hi
I use Handbrake although it’s a standalone program it’s nice not to
have to pull in all the dependencies the only other rpm to install is
libdvdcss (esp on my SLED systems).

What if it has copyright protection? Any program that can get by that?
Did I make any recommendations earlier? In post #2
Is there anyway to add DTS support to K3b?
What exactly do you need to accomplish? (DTS? IS that something to do with Audio)
When I try to rip a DVD it gives me a bunch of AC3 options, some 2ch and some 6ch, for audio. The one I’d like to use is DTS 5ch, which is what my home theater uses, but it says it’s not supported.
Try k9copy or OGMRip
What do they offer?
Sometimes we have to settle for less.
Thanks, I’ll try those.
Caf already pointed you in the right direction. Wasn’t sure if you needed to get past copyright protection on your “home made DVDs”
Once you get libdvdcss installed, then it will work with copyright protected DVDs.
Take Care,
Ian
Well I’m sorry.
I’m telling the truth they are “HOME MADE” in as far as I made them in the home.
K9copy is what I needed.
Thanks
Yes, it is a great application.
