DVD fails to work after upgrade to 11.2

Cannot find input plugin for MRL [dvd:/]

Is now the message that I get when attempting to play DVDs in Kaffeine, which worked very well in SuSe 10,3 three hours ago. Ironically, VLC now works a treat, when upgrading that in 10.3 killed it.Xine doesn’t want to work (restricted format), and Kaffeine isn’t playing any files either. Has something been dropped from my previous setup, or do I have an inadequate installation? I’m not very command line oriented I’m afraid;I just expect things to work as they did before…

Thanks in anticipation…

But kaffeine is not what it was, no longer a Packman version. Try a different player (you already figured VLC) smplayer is good.

Thanks, I guessed as much. If I could remember how I solved this last time…I have a Libdvdcss2 from another source,(I’m guessing that this is the problem) and I managed to cobble that in last time, but I don’t know what I did in the end.
Why is it that upgrades overwrite essential functions? Is there an “expert” tickbox which enables me to opt out of upgrading particular applications?
Ironically, I’ve only just got VLC working again after Videolan killed it in an upgrade that didn’t work for 10.3, despite having a download specifically for 10.3.They fixed it, it seems. I’ve now unticked the “upgrade” on that.
Thanks for replying.

If you followed the guide libdvdcss is installed from the VLC repo, but that’s all you install from there. Disable or delete that repo.
Make sure you have the packages in the list and use the Package Switcher on the Packman repo as shown in the guide.

Thanks again. I took your tip for smplayer, and it worked straight out of the box, even with .flv files, which VLC won’t so I’m happy now; I’ll try again with rebuilding Kaffeine when I have less pressing matters to play with. I particularly liked the way smplayer defaulted to downloaded Danish subtitles while I was watching Futurama. Very amusing. :-)rotfl!
